Mary's Volunteering Story
"Hi, I’m Mary, and I volunteer with the Diversional Therapy Team. Like so many people, I wanted to do something meaningful and give a little back to the community I’m part of. It wasn’t until 2004, when my husband John’s close friend, Nigel, spent some time at the Hospice, and we went to visit him a couple of times. I still remember walking in and immediately feeling how calm and welcoming it was. The staff were just so kind and compassionate.
After volunteering with Overgate in lots of different ways over the years, I found my place in 2008 when a role came up for craft volunteers in Day Hospice. I started in early 2009, and I’ve been part of the team ever since.
I’ve always worked in creative environments, photography’s always been a real passion of mine, and I still take every chance I can to enjoy it. So, volunteering as a craft volunteer just felt like the perfect fit, a lovely way to bring together my skills and experience.
I really enjoy being part of the Day Hospice Craft Volunteer Team. We try to offer a wide range of activities to help make each patient’s time as enjoyable and meaningful as possible. Some days can be a bit of a challenge, as you never quite know who will come through the doors or what they might feel up to. But that’s what makes it so personal, we always adapt what we do to suit each individual. It might be something simple like colouring, or something a bit more creative and personal. It’s all about making sure it feels right for them in that moment.
Volunteering at Overgate has opened up so much for me, new feelings, memories, and some really great friendships along the way. After COVID, I also started volunteering at the Hubs, which has been another lovely experience. It’s such a great way to help more people access the support Overgate offers, and to reach those who might not otherwise come into the Hospice.
There are so many special moments at Overgate and at the Hubs. Sometimes it’s as simple as sitting with someone, having a chat, and getting to know their story. For me, it’s just part of everyday life now. There’s always time set aside in my diary for Overgate, something I genuinely enjoy and feel proud to be part of."
We have also attached a photo of a project Mary was involved in in 2006, which brought together Day Hospice patients, Hub attendees, carers, staff and volunteers in a wonderful collaboration. You can also see Mary’s henna from 2025, which was offered as part of the Diwali celebrations.
