Last week the S3 Travel & Tourism pupils from Buckie Community High School enjoyed an inspiring visit to the Buckie RNLI Lifeboat Station.

As part of their employability skills coursework, they discovered how teamwork, communication and resilience are essential to the RNLI’s lifesaving work.

A big thank you to Leah and the RNLI team for welcoming the pupils and giving them a brilliant insight into the vital work they do for our community.

Don’t forget to come along to the Buckie RNLI Open Day on Sunday 31st May, 12–4pm.

💙 The impact of DYW Moray is reflected in stories like Ben’s

From CV support to mock interviews, every opportunity helps young people build confidence, understand their strengths, and take steps toward the future they want.
For Ben, employer engagement didn’t change his direction, he already knew he wanted to work in groundwork, but it did help him grow the confidence to speak to groups, meet employers, and believe in the path he was choosing.

Leaving school at 16 with few qualifications, Ben went straight into work. It was only later, through experience and encouragement, that he realised gaining a trade could secure his future. That decision led him to apply for an apprenticeship with Springfield, where he’s now training as an Apprentice Ground Worker.

DYW Moray exists to show young people that learning doesn’t follow one route. Confidence grows when they’re given real chances to explore, try things out, and find the path that works for them, whether that’s through school activities, employer engagement, or hands‑on experience.

⭐ Career Spotlight: Caitlin Smith

Meet Caitlin Smith, a former Greenwards Primary and Elgin High School pupil who has built a thriving career in the fitness industry, working as a Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor at PureGym Elgin, alongside running her own business.

At school, Caitlin’s favourite subject was Human Biology, a subject she now uses every single day when supporting clients with movement, health and exercise. Her path wasn’t straightforward, though. After leaving school, she went to university to study nursing, encouraged by her interest in the human body and her desire to help people. But during her placements, she realised something wasn’t quite right for her.

Worried about giving lifestyle advice she didn’t yet feel confident living herself, Caitlin started lifting weights, and discovered a genuine passion for exercise. That moment changed everything. She made the brave decision to leave her nursing course and study Fitness, Health and Exercise at college, later completing a BSc (Hons) in Sport Science at Robert Gordon University.

When she moved back to Elgin after graduating, she was offered a role at PureGym, a step that meant becoming self‑employed straight out of university, a risk that has paid off as she’s grown a successful business helping people improve their health and confidence.

Caitlin says there are wins worth remembering every day, but one standout moment was when an older client with multiple injuries told her she could now get on and off the toilet independently without using handles, a change that transformed her daily life and confidence.

💬 Best career advice she’s ever received?
When she decided to leave her first degree, her tutor told her it was okay that it wasn’t right for her, she had tried it, learned from it, and could take those lessons forward. That reassurance helped her trust her instincts and follow the path that truly suited her.

👏 A huge well done to all pupils from Elgin High School, Elgin Academy, Forres Academy and Lossiemouth High School who have taken part in the The EDT UK Insight into Apprenticeship Programmes across May.

The programme has given young people the opportunity to build confidence, develop employability skills and gain a real insight into apprenticeships through industry challenges, mock interviews, recruitment masterclasses, apprentice Q&As, wellbeing sessions and employer site visits.

A particularly huge thank you must go to Ben MacKay from EDT, whose energy, organisation and commitment to creating meaningful experiences for young people has been absolutely outstanding throughout.

We would also like to sincerely thank all of the employers and partners who supported the programmes by volunteering their time, knowledge and experiences: The Boeing Company Chivas Regal Mikeysline Gordon & MacPhail Whisky aes renewables Brightwork , Johnstons of Elgin and Fraser.

These programmes simply would not be possible without employers willing to invest their time into supporting and inspiring the next generation. Thank you for helping young people better understand the opportunities available right here in Moray.

What a day at Lossiemouth High School for the S1, S2 and S3 DYW Challenges Days 👏

Across the school, pupils took part in a huge range of hands-on activities designed to build skills, confidence, teamwork and awareness of future pathways through engaging, real-world experiences.

🔹 S1 pupils put their problem-solving and teamwork skills to the test through a series of STEM and technology challenges, including workshops delivered by BAE Systems and a creative engineering challenge led by the school’s Design & Technology department. Thank you to Travis Perkins for your support with this.

🔹 S2 pupils took part in the fantastic “Hill to Grill” project, exploring every stage of the venison journey from tracking and land management through to marketing, costings, packaging and cooking. A huge collaborative effort involving staff, partners, student teachers from UHI Perth chefs from RAF Lossiemouth Glenkilrie Larder for donating the venison and local industry experts helped bring learning to life in a truly memorable way.

🔹 S3 pupils focused on resilience, wellbeing and preparing for Senior Phase through workshops including the British Army Elite Skills Academy, Metaskills sessions and wellbeing activities designed to encourage reflection, confidence and future planning.

These days are a brilliant example of how employer and partner engagement can help young people connect learning to the wider world, develop transferable skills and discover pathways they may not otherwise have considered.

A sincere thank you to every employer, partner and member of staff who gave their time, expertise and energy to support the day!
