Vintage Vibes Edinburgh Vintage Vibes is a fresh way of tackling social isolation and loneliness among Edinburgh's over-60s, using friendly volunteers to offer companionship.

In Edinburgh, there are many over-60s who feel lonely or isolated. One study found that older people in Edinburgh are the loneliest in the UK. Research shows that chronic loneliness increases the chances of developing dementia by 64 percent and can be as damaging to health as smoking 15 ci******es a day. Vintage Vibes is tackling those statistics head on by offering a new service that's reaching out to people across the city. Using friendly volunteers we're reaching out to over-60s - our Vibes VIPs - offering companionship, reliable support and the opportunity to be more socially connected. We offer a range of services, including 1:1 visiting both in and out of the home, pet visiting, hospital visiting, friendship pools and family visiting.

Meet Drew from Stockbridge, our next Icon of Edinburgh. 📸

Drew has owned Mr Purves antiques for the last 10 years, surrounded by a collection of treasures and seeming to know everyone who walks past the door.

When we met him, he had the air of the unofficial Mayor of Stockbridge; stopping for a chat, waving to familiar faces and very much part of the community around him.

At Vintage Vibes, we know that the people make Edinburgh special, not just our famous faces or landmarks. Icons of Edinburgh celebrates the over-60s living in and visiting our city, one photograph, one person and one story at a time.

Did you know that Emily and her VIP Dave share a love of computer games and photography?

Though they have almost half a century difference in age, that hasn’t stopped them becoming great friends over the past few years through Vintage Vibes.

Emily loves popping by to see Dave, even scheduling in a visit over her lunch break as a pick me up on those work days she knows are going to be tough! And Dave thinks the world of Emily too.

We are looking for volunteers all across Edinburgh to be part of our friendships and groups, especially in EH4, EH10, EH12 and EH17. If you know someone who would make a great volunteer in Edinburgh, please let them know about Vintage Vibes and our community tackling local loneliness in older people.

Our fab new Vintage Vibes volunteer recruitment posters are popping up in all sorts of places across the city - because we’re looking for brilliant people to help tackle loneliness and isolation in Edinburgh’s older people. 💛

We’re recruiting volunteers ALL across Edinburgh, but we’d especially love to hear from you if you live, work or spend time in EH4, EH10, EH12 or EH17.

☕ Friendship volunteering – get matched with an amazing older person for regular chats, coffees, walks, adventures or simply some good company.

🎉 Group volunteering – help us create welcoming, sociable groups where older people can meet others, have fun and feel part of their community.

96% of our volunteers tell us they feel happier through being involved, with volunteering also having a positive impact on wellbeing, connection and community. 💛

The Vintage Vibes team completed the 21-mile Mighty Stride, while Susan joined the Big Stroll — all to raise vital funds and awareness for Vintage Vibes! 🚶‍♀️🎉

🥾💛 GOOD LUCK, TEAM VINTAGE VIBES! 💛🥾

Tomorrow our incredible team of Kiltwalkers will be taking on the 21-mile Edinburgh Kiltwalk to raise funds to tackle loneliness and isolation among older people across Edinburgh. 🙌

Led by our brilliant Friendships Coordinator Emma, the team brings together Vintage Vibes supporters and some of our amazing current volunteers — and they have put in SO much training to get ready for those 21 miles! 👏

We are ridiculously proud of every single one of them and so grateful for every mile walked, every training session completed and every pound raised to help create more friendships for isolated older people in our city. 💛

Now there’s only one thing left to do…

Meet lovely Pat, our next Icon of Edinburgh. 📸

Pat lives near the Meadows and is very much out and about in her city (walker and all!).

“I walk at least 10,000 steps a day and enjoy talking to people.”

At Vintage Vibes, getting older doesn’t need to mean becoming less curious, less connected or less part of the world around you. For Pat, it means getting your steps in, stopping for a chat and seeing who you meet along the way.

📍Local Knowledge: Did you know that there is a choir in Edinburgh for Carers?

Carers & Co Choir - New Members Welcome!

"We are a fun & friendly choir, as a registered charity we're free to full time carers but open to all for a small fee.

The choir is a great place for Carers to get some respite and do something enjoyable for themselves, as well as meeting other Carers and new friends who have similar experiences.

Singing is also incredibly good for you - it has numerous health benefits, releases endorphins and improves mood as well as all the social aspects! We teach up-lifting soulful songs which are all taught by ear, meaning you don't need to read music and there are no auditions!"

💛 When: Tuesdays, 10am - 12pm
(Starting Tuesday 8th Sept)

The choir is free to people who are carers, but it's also open to anyone who would like to come and join us a pay a weekly sub of £6. The choir is led by Kat Brooks, director of The Phoenix Choir Edinburgh.

Because at Vintage Vibes we believe anyone can be an icon. Everyone has something that makes them interesting, individual and worth celebrating.

Welcome to Icons of Edinburgh - our new street photography series celebrating the incredible over-60s living in and visiting our city, sharing their stories and challenging tired ideas about what getting older looks like.
