IberoDocs Scotland’s Ibero-American Documentary Film Festival
IberoDocs welcomes audiences of all ages, backgrounds, and interests.

IberoDocs – Scotland’s Ibero-American Documentary Film Festival – is a non-competitive, annual film festival that celebrates the diverse cultures of Latin America, Spain, and Portugal through creative documentary films. Led by a team largely composed of immigrants, IberoDocs amplifies underrepresented voices and explores themes such as identity, memory, community and belonging—reflecting the many

stages of the immigrant experience. Each edition features a carefully curated programme, with at least 50% of films premiering in Scotland for the first time, showcasing a vibrant mix of emerging and established talent. We aim to make our events as accessible as possible for everyone. Some screenings are available with Closed Captions and/or British Sign Language interpretation. Additional accessibility details can be found on the websites of our partner venues. If you’d like to discuss any specific access needs in advance, please don’t hesitate to get in touch—we’d be happy to help.

✨ 💜 What a journey! 💜✨

Here we are - almost the whole IberoDocs 2025 team - standing at the door of what we consider our home, the much-missed Filmhouse. And on the other side of the road, our very first ever poster on a bus shelter!

Our 11th edition has now come to an end, and honestly, we couldn’t have asked for more. After 10 years of running in spring, this year we moved to September to reach more communities. The response has been overwhelming: an average 80% attendance, almost full capacity in all Edinburgh events, and 8 sold-outs. 💥

To our incredible team — thank you for the Olympic-level work you’ve done this year, and for keeping the soul of IberoDocs alive and beating. 💪✨

And to our audiences, friends, and supporters — gracias, obrigada, thank you for being with us on this journey. You are the reason we keep going. 🌎💜

Here’s to new horizons, and to the ocean that connects us all. 🌊

🧜‍♀️ “For me, the sea is a place that calms me. When you’re near it, you feel how much we’re made of water, there’s a balance. And when I had a daughter, I had no doubt - I knew she had to be called Mar [“Sea”]. The sea is central in this family.”

Blow! director Neus Ballús joined us for a very special interview alongside her mother and daughter, as three generations shared what the sea means to them, alongside family and filmmaking.

🌊 There’s one final chance to catch Blow! and the rest of our short film programme, The Sea, in Dundee this Thursday. These four powerful short films by women filmmakers reflect on our complex relationship with the ocean and coastal life.

A new environmental strand within IberoDocs, The Sea brings together four powerful shorts by women filmmakers that reflect on our complex relationship with the ocean and coastal life.

In a special Dundee finale to IberoDocs 2025, this screening will include a BSL-interpreted panel discussion with Dr Rebecca Wade (Abertay University) and Ximena Aguilar Vega (University of Stirling) exploring how we relate to our environment.

This is an event for film lovers and nature lovers alike, exploring the complex relationships between humans and coastal life. All screenings are captioned for HOH audiences:

Driven by the director’s own connection to the sea, this personal and poetic documentary explores what the sea means in a landlocked country.

We had a dreamy day at GMAC yesterday as we kicked off our events and screenings in Glasgow 💭

Starting with a workshop led by Ecuadorian director and cinematographer María Goya Barquet, participants spent the session exploring nature as an ally in storytelling for documentary 🌿

This was followed by a screening of our new environmental strand The Sea: four powerful short films by women filmmakers reflect on our complex relationship with the ocean and coastal life. María joined us for a BSL-interpreted Q&A afterwards to reflect on her original filmmaking process for Hello Sea!

Dreaming was an important part of this process, and Giula Drummond shared with us how passages of her music have literally come to her in dreams before another captivating performance - including a call and response with everyone in attendance 🎶

If you missed The Sea in Edinburgh and Glasgow, there’s one more chance to catch this short film programme next Thursday evening in Dundee at Abertay University

🗣️ "The river was always present even though it was a frontier between two dictatorships in each side; it became a fundamental thread that united both cultures” - Eduardo Montero

Last night we marked the final Edinburgh screening of IberoDocs 2025 with the International Premiere of María la Portuguesa. Hosted at the magnificent Institut français d'Ecosse, this unique IberoDocs event was a celebration of the ties that unite us all across cultures and borders.

As well as an in-person Q&A with filmmaker Eduardo Montero, with flawless Spanish-English interpretation provided by Calum McCrae from Heriot-Watt Universityi, we also enjoyed the musical sounds of Andalusia and Portugal through live music by Inma Montero and Danielo Olivera (Tu Flamenco) 🎶

IberoDocs is only possible thanks to the generous support of our sponsors and friends, and we want to extend a special thank you to Spanish Consul General Santiago Miralles Huete for helping to organise an evening that will live long in the memory for our team!

Another day full of love spent at Filmhouse Edinburgh!

Yesterday we remembered what really matters. In the words of Adrián Orr “It’s important to tell the people who support us every day that we love them, to show we care, and never take that love for granted.”

In collaboration with Scottish Q***r International Film Festival, we kicked off the evening with Neirud, a fascinating story touching on race, identity and q***r life through changing Brazilian society. To Our Friends came next, a tale told through Spanish summers by Adrián Orr. Both films were HOH captioned, as we want everyone to be able to enjoy our events!

Both filmmakers joined us in person for BSL-interpreted post-screening Q&As, where we were lucky enough to get a peek into the minds and hearts that gave us these beautiful films.

Both Neirud and To Our Friends will be screened in Glasgow next week. Come along if you missed it this time!

What a wonderful evening, thank you to all who shared it with us! We love you 💗

🗣️ “Museums with objects but without people means nothing”

On our second night we welcomed our first filmmaker, Jose Luis Cote, for a Q&A at Filmhouse Edinburgh following a packed double screening of Relentless Memory (Scottish Premiere) and Jose’s short See it, say it, draw it.

Thanks to all those who attended and brought questions for Jose! And if you missed out, you can attend a Q&A this evening with Neus Ballús as we launch our new environmental strand The Sea with four powerful short films by women filmmakers that reflect on our complex relationship with the ocean and coastal life 🌊
