Pioneering Beyond the Familiar

The October edition of INSPIRE invites the Church to pray beyond the places and needs that are most familiar to us.

Across this month’s Prayer Diary, we journey through some of the environments where Great Commission Society is currently serving, preparing or strengthening Gospel ministry, from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Egypt to Bogotá, N'Djamena, Ukraine, Pakistan and beyond.

We pray for missionaries and national Christian leaders carrying the Gospel within their own communities; for believers being equipped for evangelism and discipleship; for families seeking freedom from exploitation; for churches serving amid war and disaster; and for those following Jesus where Christian witness can carry a high personal cost.

At the heart of this month’s theme is a simple conviction: the Great Commission continually calls the Church beyond what is comfortable, established and familiar.

Pioneering does not mean pursuing difficulty for its own sake. It means faithfully recognising where the Gospel is needed, strengthening those God has already placed there, and being willing to go when He opens the way.

As you pray through October, ask God to open doors, deepen courageous witness, strengthen indigenous churches and raise disciples who will themselves make disciples.

HER NAME IS MARYNA 🇺🇦

She was just five years old when Russian shelling struck her family home in the Kherson region of Ukraine in 2022. Maryna survived, but her injuries were so severe that doctors had to amputate her leg above the knee.

She had to learn to walk again.

Maryna’s story did not end there.

She went on to cycle, swim, play football and take up skiing. In 2025, aged eight, Maryna became the first girl in Ukraine with an above-knee prosthesis to complete a downhill ski descent with a coach, setting a Ukrainian national record.

For those of us at GCS who have continued to stand alongside the people of Ukraine, Maryna’s story reminds us of something that can so easily disappear behind the statistics of war.

Every number has a name.
Every life matters.
Every child deserves a future.

Today, Ukraine marks 35 years of independence.

For Ukrainians, independence is no longer simply a chapter in their history. It is something being defended every single day.

Behind the headlines and statistics are millions of ordinary people whose lives have been changed by war. Families have buried loved ones. Children have grown up beneath the sound of air-raid sirens. Homes have been destroyed, communities displaced, and countless people continue to live with uncertainty about what tomorrow may bring.

Yet Ukraine still stands.

Since February 2022, GCS has had the privilege of standing alongside the Ukrainian people. Month after month, through some of the darkest periods of this war, our teams and partners have continued bringing food, humanitarian aid, practical care and the hope of the Gospel to communities living with its consequences.

We have witnessed terrible suffering. We have also witnessed extraordinary courage, generosity, faith and resilience.

So today, we do more than commemorate Ukraine’s independence. We remember the human cost of defending it.

We pray for those protecting their nation and communities. We pray for the grieving, the displaced and the wounded. We pray for children who deserve to grow up knowing peace rather than war. We pray for justice, for healing, and for the day when families can rebuild their lives without fear.

Month after month, we will continue to stand with Ukraine, bringing practical aid and the hope of Christ into communities deeply affected by the war. We remain committed for as long as the need remains.

Ukraine, you are not forgotten. We have stood with you through these years of war. We stand with you today. We will continue to stand with you.

We continue to receive updates directly from our colleague Daniel as communities in Colombia face the devastating aftermath of the earthquake.

The images coming through are deeply sobering. Rescue teams continue working around collapsed buildings, while families are grieving, displaced and facing the loss of homes and livelihoods.

Daniel and his family remain actively involved in their local community, helping to distribute urgently needed supplies and standing alongside families affected by the disaster.

Immediate needs on the ground include drinking water and hydration supplies, non-perishable food, torches and practical equipment to help communities clear debris and begin the difficult work of recovery.

GCS remains in close contact with Daniel as needs continue to emerge. Through our Colombia Appeal, we are responding to the practical priorities being identified by our colleagues on the ground, helping to get support where it is most needed.

Please continue to pray for those searching through the rubble, for the injured and displaced, and for families grieving or still waiting for news. Pray also for Daniel, his family and all those serving, for protection, strength, wisdom and endurance.

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)

The Great Commission Society is deeply concerned by the devastating situation unfolding in Colombia following the powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake.

Lives have been lost, hundreds are injured, homes have been destroyed and families displaced. Rescue and relief efforts continue as communities face the immediate consequences of this disaster.

This crisis is particularly close to us. Our colleague Daniel and his family are serving within their local community, distributing urgently needed food, water and supplies, and standing alongside families affected by the earthquake.

GCS remains in close contact with Daniel as needs emerge and is responding alongside our colleagues on the ground.

Please pray for Daniel and his family, for their protection, strength and wisdom. Pray for the emergency workers, volunteers and all those involved in the relief effort. Above all, pray for those who are grieving, the injured, the displaced and those still waiting for news of loved ones.

Faith and action belong together. We pray, we give and we serve.

“In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” (James 2:17)
