The Scottish Government have today, announced the amount of drug related deaths in 2024. Behind that number are 1,017 people lost to those who loved them so it feels appropriate to share the poem read at Sundays memorial service.

“In this moment of remembrance,
We gather not to dwell on darkness,
But to illuminate the light that each soul brought into this world.

For every person we’ve lost,
there was a child full of wonder
a friend who offered laughter,
a dreamer with hopes of tomorrow.

They were artists & thinkers,
nurturers & builders,
each with a unique spark
that touched our lives in countless ways.

They’re struggles do not define them
instead, we choose to remember:
the joy they spread, the love they shared,
the lives they touched.

In every smile we recall
In every memory we cherish,
their essence lives on.

As we honour their journey,
we recognise the strength it took,
to face each day with courage.

Let us carry forward the best of who they were,
letting their light guide us toward compassion,
understanding and hope.

For in remembering their wholeness,
we keep their spirit alive and inspire change for
those still struggling.

May we always remember:
Every life is precious, Every story is sacred,
and love endures beyond all challenges!”

Well, despite the forecast, the sun shone when we needed it to. This was our second year marking International Overdose Awareness Day with a remembrance service. This year we also opted to have some time afterwards to focus on harm reduction and supports - so with a cuppa in hand, some opted to learn about Naloxone and take a kit home.

With heartfelt thanks to Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol & Drugs, Wez Steele, Scottish Drugs Forum, VOCAL Edinburgh, Simon Community Scotland, EADP at The City of Edinburgh Council, Four Square Park Café, Reuben from Gorgie Church, Robert the Piper, Caelan from Tynecastle Youth Community Pipe Band and Polwarth Parish Church

Just one week left to go! There’s no need to book, just come along. We will be starting off by remembering the people no longer with us either because of drugs or alcohol, and then we have cuppa, cake, opportunities to chat to organisations who can support friends and family, and a chance to get and learn how to administer Naloxone.

Rainbow Recovery is no more, but having organised a memorial last year to mark Overdose Awareness Day, we felt we had to do it again! This year, alongside refreshments and the opportunity to connect with others, we will also be welcoming VOCAL and Scottish Families (SFAD) who can provide information on supports available and we will also have the opportunity to get Naloxone training and a kit to take away with you. You don’t have to attend both parts, but of course you’re very welcome to.
