Edinburgh Cine and Video Society

Edinburgh Cine and Video Society The Society has occupied premises in Fettes Row, in the New Town of Edinburgh since its inception.

The Society met in rented rooms until 1938, at which time, for £500, it purchased both the ground floor and basement of no 23, Fettes Row to become the only Cine club in Scotland to own its own meeting rooms.

In 1938, members of the Edinburgh Cine Society packed their cameras and headed to the seaside at Scougal Bay. The resulting colour film, recently rediscovered in our archives, captures laughter, friendship, and a shared passion for filmmaking just months before the outbreak of the Second World War.

Nearly 90 years later, that same passion for filmmaking lives on through the Edinburgh Cine & Video Society.

Today, we need your help to preserve our historic clubrooms and secure the future of Scotland’s oldest filmmaking society.

Support our 90th Anniversary Crowdfunding Campaign and help ensure that the next generation can create, learn and share films for years to come.

90 years of filmmaking heritage. One future to protect. 🎬

EDINBURGH 48 HOUR FILM CHALLENGE — ECVS IN ACTION!

What a weekend for the Edinburgh Cine & Video Society team as writers, actors, directors, camera crews, sound recordists and musicians came together for the 2026 Edinburgh 48 Hour Film Challenge.

From first ideas and script development to rehearsals, filming and recording, the team threw themselves into the creative chaos of making a film against the clock — all within just 48 hours.

These behind-the-scenes moments capture the energy, teamwork and passion that independent filmmaking is all about. A huge well done to everyone involved for their creativity, commitment and sense of fun throughout the challenge weekend.

Founded in 1936, now in our 90th year, ECVS continues to bring filmmakers of all ages and experience levels together to learn, create and tell stories on screen.

Lights. Camera. No sleep.

Good luck to the whole team — we can’t wait to see the finished film!
