Rotary Club of Portobello

Rotary Portobello recently welcomed Tushar Arun Gandhi, the great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. Tushar runs the Gandhi World Peace Foundation and is a renowned author, speaker and activist.
We were delighted to enable a visit to Portobello High School where he addressed a large group of pupils about peace, citizenship, leadership, democracy and the role that they can play in creating positive change in the world. It was a memorable occasion. Beyond that, he happily accepted the Headteacher’s invitation to return to school a few days later to address this year’s leavers ahead of their graduation ceremony.
Before leaving Edinburgh, Rotary Portobello agreed to make Tushar an Honorary Member.

His next stop was Mexico, where he reunited with our sister club, Rotary Contreras. Together, they planted ‘Seeds of Peace’ next to Mahatma Gandhi’s sculpture.

As we approach the end of the 2025/2026 Rotary year at the end of this month, we've been looking back at the projects we've been able to support financially these past twelve months.

Most of the money given out has been raised at our car boot sales at Newcraighall station - but these sums have enabled us to attract further monies from Rotary centrally and to attract match funding from our community member Portobello High School to enable pupils to participate in various challenging external activities.

So, beneficiaries have been:

Portobello High School

Portobello Area primary schools - 5 schools

Portobello Surf Life Saving Club

VOCAL Edinburgh

Maggie's Centre, Edinburgh

Christmas toy boxes - for children in domestic abuse refuges (over 3,200 children were supported in this way by Rotary in 2025)

End Polio Now

ShelterBox - Jamaica disaster relief

Aquabox - Sri Lanka flood relief

In total, we disbursed some £4,385 to these good causes.

This week past, it was a pleasure and an honour for us in Portobello Rotary, to enable two separate presentations by Tushar Arun Gandhi, great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and head of the Gandhi World Peace Centre. The first was at Portobello High School with a large group of pupils studying politics, citizenship and conflict. Later the same day, Tushar spoke at a public session in the city centre.
Gratitude and appreciation to our dear Rotarian friend Victor Spence for making this possible.

Thanks to everyone who came along to support our car boot sale today. We raised £618 - every penny of which will go to local, national and international good causes.
