Did you know that in the North Sea, four countries are working together to ensure the future of herring?

Herring is a vitally important fish species – and in the North Sea, fish producers from Scotland, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands work under one fishery certificate – sharing information, learning from one another and working together to implement sustainable fishing practices.

A small fish with a remarkable story.

Herring is a hugely important fish species – one that sustains the livelihoods of coastal communities spanning the North Sea.

In our new film, fishermen from Scotland, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands tell us the story of how they have come together to protect herring.

Meet Graeme.

He’s a herring fisherman who works out in the North Sea, 250 nautical miles from shore.

On board the Artemis, a pelagic fishing vessel built for endurance, trips last up to three weeks between Orkney and Shetland.

The weather can turn in an instant, but this crew knows the North Sea like the back of their hand - many have grown up together, some are family.

Below deck, there’s space to rest, reset and prepare. Above, technology leads the way - sonar scans the water, nets are deployed and samples are analysed. The herring fishing process is carefully managed to land a high-quality catch within 24 hours.

Next week, we'll be releasing our new film exploring the people, partnerships and shared commitment helping to protect North Sea herring for generations to come.

Follow for the premiere.

Today is World Ocean Day, and we’re taking a moment to reflect on the importance of the Ocean with .

For Supermarket Assistant Joseph Wilkinson, it’s all about protecting the Ocean’s biodiversity for future generations. Because when the ocean thrives, we all thrive.

Sustainable fishing means more fish, more colour, more livelihoods and more for today and tomorrow. In short, it means more life in the Ocean.

By choosing seafood with the blue MSC ecolabel, you’re supporting sustainable fishing and helping protect our Ocean for generations to come.

Bluefin tuna are back. 🐟

Once pushed to the brink, bluefin tuna are now back to levels not seen since the 1960s.

Today, 95% of global tuna comes from healthy stocks and more than half of all tuna is MSC certified.

And now they are returning to UK waters.

The UK fishery is still developing. But fisheries like JC Mackintosh (MSC-certified) show what sustainable bluefin tuna can look like in practice.

With more MSC-labelled tuna on UK shelves than ever before, demand for sustainable seafood is only growing. 💙

Could a fully certified UK bluefin fishery be next? 👀

It's World Ocean Day tomorrow and MSC UK Ambassador is taking a moment for the ocean - on a blustery day at the beach in Cornwall.

Emily has recently won a Single Topic Cookery Book Award for her book Home Shores Award, which features 100 fish recipes to cook at home. For Emily, the ocean is a source of inspiration, but also something to protect.

Because sustainable fishing means more life in the ocean and more of your seafood favourites for generations to come.

Our video wall of ocean heroes celebrates the passion, care and commitment shown all around the world. Each reflection reminds us that together we can create a future where our oceans thrive.

As World Ocean Day approaches, we're shining a light on a UK fishery stock recovery story. 🌊

The Cornish hake fishery was in serious trouble in the 1990s. Overexploitation had pushed stocks to a critical low - and the future of the fishery hung in the balance.

But Newlyn's fishing community worked hard to turn things round.

Working with scientists and implementing a carefully managed rebuilding plan - including larger mesh sizes to let juvenile fish grow and thrive - they achieved something remarkable: a 300% increase in spawning stock biomass since 1998.

The fishery has recently achieved MSC certification for the third time - proof that when fishing communities commit to doing things sustainably, the ocean thrives.

Portugal and Spain almost lost their famous sardines: a few years ago, the fish were in real trouble. 🐟

But fishers, scientists and governments worked together to protect them. It paid off and now the sardines’ population has healthy numbers.

In the UK, you can enjoy Iberian sardines from retailers like and seafood brands like .

When we look after the Ocean, it looks after us!

Namibian hake is now a healthy sustainable fish stock, thanks to science and local leadership.

After years of overfishing due to a lack of agreement on quotas, the country rebuilt its hake stocks using science, careful management and strong teamwork between government and local fishers.

Today, the Namibian hake fishery is thriving and MSC certified, supporting jobs, families and healthy oceans – and it’s an international fishery whose products we see landing in UK supermarkets too.
