Two days until we open, and we're almost finished our history tour of Musical Theatre!:

The 2010s saw musical theatre become more varied than ever. Writers took inspiration from real events, classic myths, beloved films, and original concepts, creating stories that felt both familiar and new. Shows like Made in Dagenham and Hadestown tackled bigger themes, while Something Rotten! and The Choir of Man showcased the genre's range, from comedy and fantasy to heartfelt storytelling. It was a decade that proved there was no single formula for a successful musical. πŸ€“

The 2000s were all about bringing musical theatre to new audiences. Wicked reimagined a well-known story (The Wizard of Oz) from a fresh perspective based on a popular modern novel, while Little Women proved that classic literature could thrive on the musical stage.

Later in the decade, shows like Legally Blonde, Shrek, and Catch Me If You Can took hit films and turned them into stage shows that combined sharp humour, strong characters, and very memorable scores. The noughties was definitely a period that balanced spectacle with heart, and one that produced LOTS of musicals that continue to find new fans today.

NOTE: We're also producing the Edinburgh premiere of Catch Me If You Can in April 2027 πŸ‘€

The 1990s showed just how diverse musical theatre could be. Jekyll & Hyde embraced the grand, dramatic style popular in the decade, with powerful ballads and larger-than-life storytelling.

Later in the decade, RENT brought something completely different to Broadway, combining rock music with contemporary themes and characters that felt relevant to modern audiences. Together, they represent two very different sides of 1990s musical theatre and a genre that was constantly evolving.
