Terribly sad loss. Alan was the mastermind behind The Banana Box Trust and managed all shipping of shoes to Malawi. He was a hugely generous, committed and modest person whose impact will be felt in Scotland and Malawi for years to come.

It was with much sadness that we learned of the death yesterday of our friend and former colleague, Alan Laverock (70). Alan passed away peacefully in Dundee Ninewells hospital, following a cardiac arrest on Sunday. Alan loved Malawi and loved Malawians as family. Alan was deeply involved with many organisations engaged in impactful work in and with Malawi, including a number that he founded.

Alan’s loss is deeply felt in Malawi and Scotland, and our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who mourn Alan’s passing.

We heard yesterday that our shipping partner in Scotland has suffered a very serious accident. This means that for the foreseeable future we have no means of shipping shoes to Malawi. Sadly, from today we will no longer be collecting shoes - we will review the situation in the new year and see whether it's feasible to continue ShoeShare.

A huge thank you to every single person in the sports community who has kindly donated shoes, money, time and goodwill to this initiative. From a chat between two running friends, ShoeShare has grown to be an established feature of many races in Scotland and to date we have shipped over five thousand pairs of shoes to athletes and communities in Malawi. The difference you have helped make is truly valuable - a pair of used shoes may seem a small gift but the impact it has is huge, not just for sport but for sustainability, community engagement, safety and joy.

So thank you all, and happy running, wherever that takes you next.

Three sleeps to go!
