Today is the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Today, and every day, People First (Scotland) campaign for the full inclusion of people with a learning disability in society.
In local and national self-advocacy groups we come together, we support each other and decide on the actions and priorities for our Disabled People's Organisation.
We face many barriers but we continue to campaign for the full realisation of our human rights.

People First Scotland- Fife members David and Michael represent People First (Scotland) on the Fife Wide Public Engagement Forum . In this video they share their reasons for getting involved to promote the forum and encourage other members of the public to get involved. These videos are being shared on Fifes health and Social Care Partnerships Social media pages. It is essential that people with a learning disability are represented in policy and processes that affect them and collective advocacy supports that involvement. https://fb.watch/CVTuZ0U5Jd/

We are here, using our collective voice to make change happen!
Members from People First groups in Midlothian recently met with staff from Midlothian Council to help improve information and procedures around Corporate Appointeeship for people with learning disabilities. They agreed that more information needs to be available for people under Appointeeship and the people who help to support them with this, so that everyone knows how things should work. The Council will now update their processes and create easy read resources with input from members that can be shared with the people that need them. Members are looking forward being involved in this and have another three sessions planned to continue to help make other things about Corporate Appointeeship better.

Today we were at the Learning Disability week event in Edinburgh. We had a stall and spoke to people about our work. We want to spread awareness of how important it is to protect collective advocacy. We want to have our voices heard locally and nationally.

We are here, getting our voices heard!
Members of the our IMPACT Network group are making a film about Supported Decision-Making to explain how people with a learning disability can be involved in decision-making processes in all parts of our life. Here is a photo of us finalising and practicing our script ahead of the filming tomorrow. Look out for the final film soon!

We are here, speaking up for our rights!
The People First Parents’ Group have been working for over a year with Dr Arlene McGarty (Scottish Learning Disabilities Observatory) to provide advice, information and recommendations for a report commissioned by the Scottish Government that explores what kind of support is available to parents with a learning disability. The Parents’ Group have been campaigning for many years for better support for parents with a learning disability and this important report highlights the gaps in support across Scotland.

We are here, bringing the voice of lived experience!
People First Scotland co-chairs the Scottish Government’s Gender Based Violence and Learning Disability Steering group, alongside SCLD. Here is a blog from the Steering Group for Learning Disability Week.

acts as a microphone for people with a learning disability to have their voices heard; it encourages people to listen and understand the experiences of people with a learning disability and to think about ways in which they can support change. means being seen, heard, and supported.”

For women with learning disabilities, this is vital in the fight against gender-based violence. 💜

We are here, using our lived experience to make services better!
Members of the People First Fife Women’s group are working with the Fife Violence Against Women Partnership to create a training for organisations that support women facing domestic abuse in Fife. We want to make sure all staff have specific training about working with victims who have a learning disability. Our aim is to make sure women with a learning disability get the best support at the right time, if they ever face domestic abuse.
