Our Green Team Transition Programme supports pupils moving up to high school helping them connect with nature, themselves and others in a small group setting.

The programme with Forrester High School began 5 years ago and what began as a pilot grew into a hugely successful programme. The Green Team’s Transition Programme is now embedded into the school’s range of additional support for pupils moving up to high school from all its feeder primaries.

#6. A change of plans due to the Cairngorms wildfire took the YES Green Changemakers to the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore. Here we explored historical buildings and crofts, learning about how communities used to live in the 18th-20th centuries.
Sitting on a hill with our lunches and a view out to the woods, we contemplated what it would be like living back then, having a closer relationship with nature. We asked ourselves; would we trade all of the comforts of living today to have a simpler life back then, more connected to the land?

#5. During the YES Green Changemakers 4 day residential in the Cairngorms in July, we discovered all sorts. Whilst on a hike in Glenfeshie, the Changemakers explored what looked like an empty hillside, but was actually a bog, full of strange plants and wildlife.
The group spotted this pop of bright red amongst the moss called sundew. This carnivorous plant relies on an alternative energy source as bogs are nutrient poor, instead getting its food by trapping insects. Bugs beware!

#4. Driving through Aviemore on the way to the YES Green Changemakers residential in July, we were able to see the plumes of smoke coming off the wildfire in Glenmore. Although the presence of the wildfire cancelled some activities and left a heavy mood in the group, it also led to important conversations about human driven climate change and what we could do about it as a group. Staying in Glenfeshie during the fire gave us a greater appreciation of nature in the Cairngorms, perhaps even more than if we were there before the fire, showing us not to take it all for granted…

Such a lovely time earlier this month with a wonderful PFB Scotland community group of young people. And thank you to our brilliant volunteer Adam for connecting us all so we could make it happen.

The families sent some feedback from the session at Saughton Park, “Dear Margon and Adam, thank you so much for the wonderful nature event you did for us at PFB. The kids and parents loved it. Thank you for all your efforts.”

Our pleasure, we loved it. Let's do it again some time! 💚

What a treat! 💚 Our Green Team Youth Panel visit the soon to re-open Palm House at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Inspired by the themes of ‘nature’ and ‘new beginnings’, they did some sketching, then some ‘zine’ making. The session was facilitated by our very own volunteer Carys, who also works at the Botanics 💚
