Friends of the Earth Scotland deeply condemns the racist violence that has taken place on our streets over the last week. It is shameful that people of colour and migrant communities in Scotland are reporting being afraid to leave their homes.
This is not an isolated event but a result of divisive politics, which tries to shift the blame for the problems in our society away from those really responsible.
If you can’t afford your energy bill, blame the energy companies making billions in profit, not the migrant family next door who are also struggling to keep the lights on.
Climate and migrant justice are deeply linked. Extreme weather caused by the climate crisis and the violent extraction of resources in the name of profit are causing mass displacement across the world. For many people, we must fight this system and for their right to stay in their homes and lands.
People have always moved, and migration brings diversity and beauty to our communities. Whether for love, for work, for safety or another reason, we also fight for peoples’ right to move, and to find safety and dignity when they get there.
Join us in Glasgow on Saturday 13th June for Defend the Defenders, an evening of music and poetry, celebrating diversity and cultures from around the world. We will also be fundraising for people on the frontline of environmental justice, fighting to protect their lands, water and people.
Tickets are by donation, no one will be turned away for lack of funds and the doors are open to anyone who needs an evening to recharge after this week’s events. More info:
