Scotland's Gardens Scheme

Scotland's Gardens Scheme Scotland's Gardens Scheme was founded in 1931 to raise money for the Queen's Nursing Institute Scotland.

We now also support Maggie’s & Perennial - gardens can support a charity of their choice. We famously open beautiful private gardens often with teas. From urban allotments to country castles and from big, mature gardens to small cottage gardens, we have wonderful gardens open for charity, all around Scotland. We support garden owners to open their gardens, raising valuable funds for charity throu

gh ticket price, teas and plant sales. Supported by a small staff team, we are nearly 98% volunteer-led with over 175 core volunteers, as well as our many generous garden openers, nearing 500 gardens each year. The money raised through our openings support about 250 different charities every year. We combine the twin values of gardening and volunteering, bringing wellbeing benefits both through connection with the natural environment, and by bringing people together working towards a shared cause and being part of a wonderful community of like-minded volunteers. Our Beneficiaries:
60% of the funds raised at each garden opening are given to the charity chosen by the garden owner. Over 200 large and small charities benefit annually in this manner. 40% net of the funds raised are distributed to the charities supported by Scotland's Gardens which are:
The Queen's Nursing Institute Scotland which provides support for the professional development of community and primary nurses and the welfare of retired Queen's Nurses. Perennial, The Gardeners Royal Benevolent Society which is the only charity dedicated to helping Scottish horticulturists in need. Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres which help anyone affected by cancer through programmes of support designed to give people the tools they need to cope with the major upheaval cancer causes in their lives.

🪴🆕💚🌼 NEW OPEN GARDEN 🐞🌺🌿🆕

Tucked behind a house at the centre of the village of St Margaret's Hope, you will find the Orkney Apothecary Garden… each plant a familiar companion and herbal ally.

💚With a circular path at its heart, just wide enough for slow footsteps and a basket on your arm, beds of calendula, yarrow, plantain, rose, mint, and lemon balm grow amongst nettles, clover and other wildflowers.
💚 In this wild sanctuary, we are encouraged to take things slow, and repair.
