We've had a fun-filled day with our partners at Siemens Mobility and Edinburgh Trams!

Our guests were invited along to enjoy some sunshine, great food, and the chance to explore a tram at the fundraising open day in support of RNIB Scotland.

We even put our volunteer drivers to the test on the tram simulators, with some impressive performances on display!

It was fantastic to bring so many people together for this brilliant event. A huge thank you to Siemens for their support and for hosting such a wonderful fundraiser.

We certainly made the most of the sunshine!

What's alt-text and how do you include it?

Alt-text is a really simple way to make your posts more accessible. It describes what an image is of, and whether there's any text within it. For those using screen-readers to read aloud posts, they'll hear what an image is of, rather than a computer's guess, or just the word, 'image'!

On Facebook, you can add alt-text by first uploading your image, and then using the edit button, usually at the top left of the image. Select the alternative text option, and write a useful description of what is in the image. Don't forget to select 'Save'. You won't see your alt text on your post, but it'll be read aloud for those using screen readers.

It can also be useful to write an image description within your post or image caption as we've done below. Give it a go!

If you're wondering how to use the Lothian Bus travel app, then we can help!

Come along to our drop-in session on Wednesday 24 June, 11am - 1pm, to speak with Lothian Bus staff, learn about the app and it's accessibility.

It's also a chance to discuss any thoughts or challenges you have accessing public transport in and around Edinburgh and the Lothians. If you want to find out more about the event, pop us a message!

Find us at RNIB Scotland, 12 Hillside Crescent, EH7 5EA.

We'll be coming!

Scotland's heading to the 2026 FIFA Men’s Football World Cup and blind and partially sighted fans will be able to follow every moment.

Scotland's Group C games on BBC1 will include enhanced alternative commentary from BBC Radio 5 Live, and games on STV will include live audio description.

For many blind and partially sighted people, following live sport can still mean relying on incomplete commentary, inaccessible broadcasts, or facing barriers to attending in person. People with sight loss should be able to watch content like everyone else – and crucially, in real time.

Audio Description describes key visual elements – body language, scenery, on-screen action – that commentary alone can't always capture. It provides crucial visual information that allows blind and partially sighted fans to truly experience the game, not just hear it. And it can enrich the experience for all viewers too.

Here's where to find the upcoming games:

Haiti vs Scotland - June 14, Boston, 2am (UK time) on BBC1,
Scotland vs Morocco - June 19, Boston, 11pm (UK time) on STV, and
Scotland vs Brazil - June 24, Miami, 11pm (UK time) BBC1.

If you tune in, we'd love to hear what you think of the descriptive offering – let us know!

We've been providing visual awareness training to Learning and Access colleagues at Glasgow Museums!

The team support our community visits to museums, helping to ensure that blind and partially sighted people can access and enjoy everything the museums have to offer. They are now even better equipped to welcome and support all visitors!

A big thank you to Glasgow Museums for their ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusion.

There's no better way to end Volunteers Week than with our volunteers and cake!

Happy Volunteers Week to all our volunteers across Scotland, and thank you for everything you do.🩷

Could you spare a few minutes to help us shine a light on accessible reading this Volunteers Week? All you need to do is pop down to your local library in June and check out their offer of audio books or large print titles.

Not only will you be taking part in this year’s Big Help Out, your feedback will help us build a clearer picture of accessible reading services across the UK. Because everyone should have the chance to enjoy reading in an accessible format that works for them.

[Video description and transcript:
Lara stands outside Maidenhead library, beside a sign showing the opening hours.
I'm Lara, I work for the RNIB, and I'm here to show you how you participate in our Big Help Out micro volunteering opportunity.
So I am here at Maidenhead Library to show you exactly what you do. So, come with me.
[Inside the library, Lara stands beside shelves with a Large Print sign above them]
Lovely selection of large print books. All you need to do is take a photograph either of the large print books or you can take a photo of yourself with books.
Post that on social media tagging Big Help Out, RNIB, hashtag HiVis.
And, for extra credit, you can go find some accessible books in your children's library as well.
Here in Maidenhead, we have something very special. Giant print and braille, and more talking books on CDs.
[Lara holds up a large print and braille version of The Tiger Who Came to Tea]
So again you would just take a picture of the stock and yourself. It can just be just the stock. If you don't want to be in the picture that's absolutely fine.
And then again put it on social media. Any platform is fine.
Tag Big Help Out, RNIB, hashtag HiVis.
Thank you so much.]

Our Volunteers Week celebrations continue!

Meet Joyce, who volunteers with our Cumbernauld Peer Support Group. This is a lovely group of people who come along to connect and share with each other.

Thank you Joyce, for giving volunteering a chance, and to every one of our volunteers who has done the same!

Happy Volunteers Week!

Meet Antoni, one of our wonderful volunteers at our Edinburgh Products and Advice Centre, helping customers find the products that make everyday life a wee bit easier.
