It’s our favourite time time of the week: sensory play day! 🥰🫧

Happy boy Joey had the best time wriggling to music and looking at all the colours and bubbles.

Being in hospital can mean spending a lot of time in one room, so these sessions give babies the chance to explore and just be little, and give families a happy moment together away from thinking about treatment.

We’re looking for a creative, organised and compassionate Arts Officer to deliver ECHC’s Arts Programme. You’ll bring creative activities and projects to children, young people and families, both in the hospital and in community settings across Lothian.

At just three years old, Ellie spent over six months at Edinburgh Children’s Hospital while being treated for leukaemia. But throughout her time in hospital, there was always room for giggles and a boogie.

“As soon as she saw the red T-shirts, she knew something fun was about to happen,” says her dad, Graeme.

ECHC's artists brought the music, and Ellie brought the moves! 💃

Our friends at Dynamic Earth brought the wonders of space to children at Edinburgh Children's Hospital. 🧑‍🚀

When Emma from Dynamic Earth visits, she has one aim: to give children and families a "positive experience with science." This time, children got to become astronauts for the day! They touched a real meteorite, tried on a space helmet and wrote their very own packing lists for a trip to space 🧑‍🚀

"She never stopped being Ellie. Even in hospital, she was still smiling, still dancing, still having fun." ❤️

When three-year-old Ellie developed a fever in February, her mum and dad, Tasha and Graeme, thought it was just a cold. But the symptoms didn't go away, and soon bruises and a rash of tiny blood spots began to appear.

After a visit to the doctor's, Ellie was transferred to Edinburgh Children's Hospital and diagnosed with leukaemia.

"The minute you hear those words, your mind goes to the worst possible place," says Graeme. "We just went into survival mode."

After her first round of chemotherapy, Ellie was in remission, but three more rounds lay ahead. For five months, hospital became home.

Through it all, Ellie kept smiling. "As soon as she saw the red T-shirts, she knew something fun was about to happen," says Graeme. "It gave her something to look forward to."

Ellie formed a special bond with dancer Christina, who visited every week to play music and dance with her. Their friendship didn't end when Ellie went home. Christina was even invited to her fourth birthday party, where she got everyone dancing! 💃

For Tasha, massages with complementary therapist Susie gave her precious time for herself after months of sleeping in hospital beds.

Inspired by his daughter, Graeme ran the Edinburgh 10K and raised more than £5,000 for ECHC!

Astronomically great fun on the wards with Dynamic Earth! 🧑‍🚀

Once a month, children are transported to a little bit of the world beyond the hospital, to the rainforest, the ocean and even space! 🚀

It's all 0 gravity and 100% fun giving children the chance to learn, imagine and explore – all from their hospital bed! ✨

From the first goal to the final whistle, you brought energy, teamwork and impressive football skills.

On your marks, get set... bake! 🍰

Just as Bake Off season gets underway, our much-anticipated Bake It Happen competition was back, which means only one thing - a whole line-up of creative showstoppers, baked by NHS staff, ECHC staff and volunteers, and young people, with 0 soggy bottoms in sight!

We were delighted to welcome back our very special guest judge, Great British Bake Off winner Peter Bakes, who once again had the tricky job of choosing a Star Baker. 👨‍🍳🌟

It was a real battle of the chocolate cakes this year, and the winner is...

15-year-old Erryn, who spent 14 hours creating an impressively lifelike Gizmo cake! 🎂

A huge thank you to every baker who gave their time to bake wonderful cakes and traybakes, all to raise money for children and families in hospital. And of course, an enormous thank you to Peter for returning to judge another brilliant Bake It Happen.

You’re all worthy of a firm Hollywood handshake. ❤️

Five months in hospital is a long time for any family. For Noah, it was the very beginning of his life.

Born with a rare condition affecting his oesophagus, Noah spent his first five months in hospital.

Mum Cuan said, "When you spend months living beside a hospital cot, your world becomes very small. The uncertainty is one of the hardest parts. You can never fully relax because you're always worrying what might happen next.

I've gone into what I call ‘freeze mode’. I miss being at home. I miss going for walks, exercising, reading a book - all the little things that made life feel normal.”
The emotional impact was overwhelming for Noah’s parents, yet amongst the fear and exhaustion, support from ECHC helped make their journey more bearable.
Regular check ins and chats helped to remind them that they were not alone and break up the long hospital days.

Sensory play was a family favourite, giving them the opportunity to experience some normality while in hospital. Noah loved the session, giggling and interacting which became a highlight of the week for his parents.

Today, Noah is still facing challenges, but he continues to amaze everyone around him, “He's such a happy little boy. He's been through more in a few months than most people do in a lifetime, and somehow, he still wakes up smiling.”
