Age Scotland

Age Scotland We are the Scottish charity for older people. Our vision is that no one in Scotland faces the challenges of older age alone.

We stand with and support people in Scotland so they can grow older with security, are valued and connected and have a good quality of life. We provide older people, their families and carers with high quality information and advice services and we tackle loneliness through our dedicated friendship programmes. We campaign and influence on the issues older people tell us they care about. We support

and fund hundreds of older people’s groups and community initiatives across the country and deliver workshops to improve people’s quality of life. We involve and empower people affected by dementia and host national forums for older people from ethnic minorities and the LGBTQ+ community to help address the inequalities they face. Born out of the merger of Age Concern Scotland and Help the Aged in Scotland in 2010, Age Scotland is the leading charity in Scotland on older people, age and ageing. Our page is a growing online community, and we encourage discussion, conversation and debate around the issues affecting older people in Scotland and further afield. This community is actively moderated and we will remove offensive posts and spam.

Feeling lonely is something many of us experience at different points in our lives but it can feel difficult to talk about.

Later life can bring big changes, from retirement and bereavement to health challenges, financial pressures or changes in routine and relationships. These experiences can affect how connected we feel to others.

Our latest article for explores some of the reasons older people experience loneliness and why it’s important to challenge the stigma around talking about it. It also highlights simple ways to build connection, from reconnecting with family and friends to getting involved in local activities, lifelong learning or volunteering.

Loneliness is more common than many people realise. Building social connection does not always mean making big changes. Sometimes it begins with one small step, one conversation or one new opportunity.

💬 We’d love to hear from you - what helps you feel connected?

After 28 years away, Scotland have finally made it back to football’s biggest stage - our first World Cup since France '98.

To mark the occasion, we caught up with Joan Masterton, who will be representing Scotland in our very first appearance at the UEFA International Walking Football Festival in Switzerland later this month.

Ageism is so ingrained in society we often don‘t notice it. ‘Stuck in their ways’, ‘You look good for your age‘, and ‘It‘s time to slow down‘.

Comments like these add up - limiting work, impacting health and feelings of value.

We're supporting to question ageism. When we question ageism, we start to change it.

Three quarters of bank branches have disappeared from our high streets over the last decade.

Communities up and down the country are really struggling without their banks and free to use cash facilities, each demanding the introduction of banking hubs to fill that hole – and they are right to do so.
