What is a trade union? It's an organised group of workers who have joined together to achieve common goals such as better working conditions, fairer wages or a safer working environment. It doesn't have to be huge - union members campaign for many improvements to the workplace like designating a staff room, updating computer chairs to ones that give support or making sure your rights around sick p

UNISON is known as the 'public service union' and covers people who work in health, education, local council services and voluntary sector. In a trade union you are better off. Your rights at work are protected and can be defended by support from other members, union stewards and staff. You can work together with other people in your workplace and members across the country to solve problems at work and in society. Unions can also offer legal representation and a range of member benefits and discounts. Union membership is your insurance policy for work. The University of Edinburgh branch
