Got a workshop to teach but nowhere to host it?

Over the years, Edinburgh Open Workshop has become home to all kinds of creative classes. Glass blowing and ceramics have filled our event space, our textile room has welcomed everything from Sewing Techniques to Make Your Own Backpack, and our new classroom is already proving to be the perfect spot for DIY and upholstery.

These are just a few examples.

Whether you're planning a one-off session, a regular class or something completely new, we may have just the space you're looking for.

So if you've got skills to share and are searching for a welcoming, well-equipped place to bring people together, we'd love to hear from you.

You asked for more textiles...and we listened. 🧵

Following feedback from our members and course participants, we’re delighted to be launching our biggest-ever programme of sewing and textiles courses at Edinburgh Open Workshop.

We’ve seen a real growth in interest in textiles, sewing and garment making, so we’ve worked with experienced tutors to introduce a much broader range of ways to learn, whether you’re a complete beginner, want to develop existing skills or simply fancy trying something new.

New courses include:
🧶 Machine Knitting Introduction
🪡 Pojagi Style Stained Glass Curtain
✂️ Laser Cut & Sew Taster
🧸 Scrap-Busting Soft Toys
👚 Sewing Techniques & Garment Techniques

There’s a real mix of traditional skills and new approaches too, from learning the fundamentals of machine knitting and garment construction to combining sewing with digital technology in our new Laser Cut & Sew sessions.

Alongside our expanded textiles programme, we’re also launching a new four-week Laser Cutting course, with Power Tools workshops planned for later in the season.

All our courses are hands-on and taught by experienced professional makers, with a focus not just on making something to take home, but on developing practical skills and the confidence to keep making independently.

The new programme runs from late August to December and bookings are now open.

This recent commission was all about precision.

Our client designed a clever folding desk and shelving unit herself, preparing every file ready for manufacture. She came to Made @ for one thing: accurate CNC cutting.

Using 18mm birch plywood, we machined each component ready for assembly, leaving the sanding, finishing and final details in her capable hands.

One of our favourite features is the folding shelf. It uses a traditional rule joint to create a smooth curved profile that closes the gap as it folds into place. While the main components were CNC machined, this detail was crafted by hand – a great example of how digital fabrication and traditional woodworking techniques can work beautifully together.

Every project we work on is different. Sometimes we're involved from the first sketch, while other times we're simply the manufacturing partner, helping turn a finished design into reality.

Have a project in mind? Whether you need one-off components, a prototype or a small production run, we'd love to hear from you.

Recreating a well-loved piece.

One of our Pay As You Go (PAYG) members recently used the workshop to recreate a small wooden stool. From carefully measuring each component to machining and assembling the finished piece, the project is a great example of the kind of independent making that happens every day at Edinburgh Open Workshop.

PAYG membership is ideal for experienced makers who want flexible access to professional tools and machinery, without the commitment of a monthly membership. Whether you're building something from scratch, repairing a favourite item, or recreating a design, you can work on your own projects with the support of our workshop team nearby if you need it.

If you've got a project you've been meaning to start, why not make it here?

Find out more about Pay As You Go membership on our website or get in touch if you have any questions—we'd be happy to help.

Looking for a rehearsal space? 🎭

Finding the right place to develop new work can make all the difference.

Recently, we were delighted to welcome Stillpoint to Edinburgh Open Workshop as they rehearsed their latest production, Baby Mash-Up, What on Earth Are You Doing?, ahead of its run at the Traverse Theatre. Our events space gave the company room to experiment, collaborate and bring their ideas to life.

Bright, spacious and filled with natural light, the space can be adapted to suit theatre, dance and movement rehearsals, creative development sessions, and performance preparation. It's also available to hire for meetings, workshops, conferences and community events.

If you're looking for a flexible, welcoming space for your next project, we'd love to hear from you.

Find out more about hiring our studios and events space on our website, or get in touch to discuss your ideas.

From Sketch to Stencil

We recently had the pleasure of working with an artist who wanted to transform their hand-drawn leaf illustration into a reusable stencil.

Starting with the original drawing, we digitised the artwork, carefully adapted it for stencil making, and then used our laser cutter to produce the finished stencil. It's always satisfying to see an idea evolve from a simple sketch into a precision-cut tool that's ready to be used again and again.

Custom stencils are great for everything from printmaking and murals to signage, textiles, and creative workshops. If you have a hand-drawn design, logo, or illustration that you'd like to turn into a stencil, we'd be happy to help.

Swipe through to see the journey from the original sketch to the finished stencil!

Have you ever thought about turning one of your own designs into a stencil? We'd love to hear your ideas in the comments.
