Nothing means more to us than a message from a NICU family 💜

“Hello Edinburgh 👋🏼

Connor has settled really well since being transferred. He’s already making himself at home — lulling them into a false sense of security… and we’re sure the cheeky antics won’t be far behind!

We’re missing you all lots and just wanted to say another huge thank you for everything you’ve done for him (and for us) over these past months. We really wouldn’t be at this stage without all your care, support, and kindness.

With love,
Josh, Mel & Connor 🤍”

This week we would love to celebrate our neonatal graduates Rory and Callan who are celebrating their 2nd Birthday this week 🎂. Their journey began with the twins being born at 28 weeks gestation in Simpsons NNU and then transitioned onwards to St John’s SCBU to build their strength before going home. We received a beautiful message from mum and dad this week who were delighted to let us share their journey with you as below with their permission.
………………………………………………………….

To the Teams at St John’s SCBU and Simpson’s NICU, This week. Rory and Callan turn two, and as this special milestone approaches, we felt it was the perfect moment to reach out, share an updated photo of them, and express our deepest gratitude.

There truly are no words strong enough to capture how thankful we are for everything you did for our boys. The care, skill, compassion, and dedication shown by your teams gave Rory and Callan the very best start in life. Because of you, we have been able to watch them grow, laugh, and thrive into the beautiful little boys they are today.

We are also so incredibly grateful for your unwavering patience and kindness, It did not go unnoticed, and it meant more to us than we can ever properly express.

You didn’t just care for our babies, you gave our family the most precious gift imaginable: the chance to build a life together filled with love, joy, and memories we cherish every single day.

Please know that we carry your kindness with us always, and we will never forget the incredible impact you have had on our lives.

With our eternal gratitude and warmest wishes,

Eilidh, Steven, Stevie, Rory and Cally

………………………………………………….

Very Happy Birthday from all of us here and onwards health and happiness 🥳❤️

On Saturday, we came together for one of the most magical moments in the SSCB calendar — our Tree of Light celebration at Canopy Edinburgh, Edinburgh Futures Institute.

The afternoon began with words from Gemma Springford, SSCB Trustee and mum to Jack and Ryan, who shared her family’s story of spending nearly ten weeks in the neonatal unit after her boys arrived at 30 weeks. Her message reminded us why SSCB exists, and why the Tree of Light is so important: it connects families who understand the emotional journey of neonatal care, and it celebrates the strength behind every story.

Gemma also reminded us that 2025 marks 40 years of Simpsons Special Care Babies - an incredible milestone for a charity that is still 100% volunteer led, raising over £100,000 each year toward equipment, research, training and family support that simply wouldn’t otherwise be available.

We were honoured to welcome Peter Heatly, SSCB’s original founder, along with his family. Peter’s involvement began 40 years ago following the birth of his son Gary at just 27 weeks. To have him with us on our 40th anniversary felt especially meaningful.

Peter and his family then led the much-loved moment everyone looks forward to: the switch-on of the Tree of Light. As the lights came to life, many reflected on the loved ones they were celebrating, and those they were remembering.

Everyone who attends Tree of Light carries their own story. Some celebrated happy outcomes and healthy children; others honoured the memory of babies no longer with us. And many simply came to stand alongside friends or family members who have experienced neonatal care.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to Canopy for hosting us so warmly. Your support helps fund vital neonatal equipment, research, training and family support.

And good news - Canopy Edinburgh will be hosting an afternoon tea in January with a percentage of proceeds going to SSCB. A perfect Christmas gift idea! 🎄✨ www.canopyedi.com/sscb-x-canopy
