🏰 Our Strathclyde Group is looking forward to a day exploring some of the Scottish Borders’ finest architectural treasures this August.

Our Summer Study Day will take us to the magnificent Mellerstain House and Floors Castle, where we’ll discover centuries of architectural innovation, beautiful interiors, impressive collections and stunning landscapes.

From the elegance of the Adam family designs at Mellerstain to the dramatic Gothic transformation of Floors Castle, this promises to be a fascinating journey through Scotland’s architectural history.

And with fellow heritage enthusiasts along for the ride, it’s sure to be a memorable day out.

🏛️ Explore restoration, ruins and historic gardens in Ellon with the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland North East Group.

This special visit includes Leask House (also known as Pitlurg), built in 1826 by Archibald Simpson for the Gordon family. Destroyed by fire in 1927, the house lay in ruins until restoration began in 1989.

The tour also visits Ellon Castle Gardens, where the remains of the old castle and its once-renowned gardens are being carefully restored.

Join the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland Strathclyde Group for a special summer study day visiting two of Scotland’s most remarkable historic houses.

This full-day trip by car explores properties of exceptional architectural, historical and cultural significance:

📍 House of the Binns
Home to the Dalyell family since the early 17th century, this much-loved house has grown in stages since the 1610s and retains the atmosphere of a lived family home.

📍 Hopetoun House
One of Scotland’s grandest country houses, combining the work of Sir William Bruce, William Adam and his sons. Highlights include magnificent Georgian interiors and insights into ongoing conservation work.

🏛️ Explore lost grandeur and remarkable restoration in Ellon

Leask House (also known as Pitlurg) was built in 1826 by renowned architect Archibald Simpson, destroyed by fire in 1927, and has been under restoration since 1989 by its current owners.

The old castle at Ellon dates back to the 1400s and was dramatically transformed into a romantic ruin in 1851. Its once-famous gardens are now being carefully restored by a local trust.
