TMSA Scotland

TMSA Scotland In this way they are able to sustain the specific cultural traditions of their area, as well as those of Scotland generally.

Set up in 1966, the Traditional Music & Song Association of Scotland aims to promote, preserve and present all the music and song traditions of Scotland through local branch and national activities. Encouraging both widespread popular participation and individual artistic excellence, the TMSA branches work on a local level to provide opportunities for universal participation by running festivals,

ceilidhs, concerts, workshops and competitions. On a national level and in partnership with other traditional arts organisations, the TMSA campaigns to have the intrinsic value of Scottish Traditional Art forms recognised and to secure current and future funding for them.

✨ Introducing Patrons’ Concert Artists ✨ Neil Sutcliffe

Neil Sutcliffe is an accordionist and folksinger from Stirling, Scotland. He performs as a soloist and in several different ensembles and bands. His roots are in the traditional music scene in Scotland, coming from a family of musicians and growing up surrounded by folksongs, ballads, pipe tunes, and ceilidh dancing. As a folksinger, he has been deeply influenced by singers such as Geordie McIntyre, Alison McMorland, Pete Seeger, Adam McNaughton and of course his parents Jo Miller and Steve Sutcliffe. He has a particular interest in political protest songs and humorous songs.

Neil studied Classical Accordion with Djordje Gajic at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, graduating with a First Class BMus (Honours) degree in Performance, and receiving several awards for his academic work and research into the history and contemporary accordion scene in Scotland. As a classical musician, he focuses on researching, performing and promoting neglected Scottish composers and music relating to Scottish history, language and place. He is passionate about bringing this music to new audiences, and making classical music accessible and engaging to all. He is a co-founder of The Bubblyjock Collective, a chamber music ensemble dedicated to Scottish Classical repertoire.

Alongside his purely musical work, Neil regularly collaborates with Storytelling and Theatre productions, both as a Musical Director and as a Storyteller in his own right.

✨ Introducing Patrons’ Concert Artists ✨ CLELLAND SHAND

Clelland Shand was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife and now stays in the City of Dunfermline. He started studying music from age eight guided by tutor Keith Dickson. With Keith’s guidance he continued to excel in his musical abilities and quickly got into the competitive scene at a young age. At age twelve, he travelled to France to compete at the World Accordion Championships and at fourteen he did the same thing, this time in Portugal. Clelland still has lessons with Keith and frequently states that he wouldn’t be in the position he is in if he didn’t have Keith as his tutor. Fast forward to present day, Clelland is now a first year BMus student on the classical performance course and was a finalist in the esteemed BBC Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year competition in 2025.

He is now heavily influenced by traditional music and looks up to Martyn Bennett as one of his idols hoping to create something similar to his famous album ‘Bothy Culture’. As well as this, he is following in Martyn’s footsteps being mentored by classical musicians with Djordje Gajic being Clelland’s main classical accordion tutor during his time at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Clelland also has lessons outside the Conservatoire with Andrew Waite, who is regarded as one of the top traditional accordionists in Scotland as his technique and playing style is so unique. During the academic year of 2025/26, Clelland was awarded the Martyn Bennett Scholarship and will use the funds provided to get time in a studio to make some new material featuring electronic dance music mixed in with traditional music.

✨ Introducing Patrons’ Concert Artists ✨ JIMMY HUTCHISON

Jimmy Hutchison is one of of Scotland's most invaluable tradition bearers – a singer and weaver. Originally from South Uist, Jimmy has been involved in the folk revival since the 1960s and now runs Newburgh Handloom Weavers beside the Tay in Fife. A new film "Celebrating Jimmy Hutchison" was released in 2026 as part of Edinburgh’s Folk Film Gathering 2026.

Jimmy Hutchison was born at Frobost, on the Isle of South Uist. His mother was from the island, his father from Glasgow. There he lived until the age of ten, when the family moved to Perth. He was raised bi-lingual, speaking both Gaelic and English.
Hutchison was drawn to the traditional music of the area surrounding his new home, learning the songs of great source singers like Jeannie Robertson, Jimmie McBeath and the Stewarts of Blair. This education from these masters of tradition, is no doubt a huge part of his expertise as a Scots singer. But his gentle, understated, instantly listenable style of singing has a quality of Gaelic song – where the story comes first, with everything else in service to that.
In any case, he’s been an integral part of the scene and tradition for decades, particularly with the Traditional Music and Song Association. He was at the TMSA’s very first festival in 1966, and was the first winner of the Willie Scott Cup for men’s traditional singing when the festival introduced competitions in 1969. Forty seven years later, he won the same cup at the 2016 Kirriemuir festival. That same year, he appeared in the lineup of the 2016 Celtic Connections opening concert – The Carrying Stream – a celebration of fifty years of the TMSA; singing to over two thousand people in a sold out Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

For his entire singing career, he’s had another full time career – as a joiner and draughtsman. Despite not going in to music full time, he’s managed a great deal over that 35 years- recording for the BBC and performing across the UK and Ireland.

✨ Introducing Patrons’ Concert Artists ✨ ROO GEDDES

Raised in a highly musical family in Glasgow, Scotland, Roo Geddes draws on a unique breadth of traditions in his playing. A graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with First Class Honours in Classical Violin, he went on to become the first violinist in Scotland to pursue a Masters in Jazz. He performs on his great-great-grandfather’s fiddle, bringing a distinctive voice to a career that spans collaborations with leading orchestras across the UK and Ireland as well as his own acclaimed ensembles Roo & Neil, Darach and Awkward Family Portraits.

As a soloist, Roo has toured internationally, performing concerti with the Glasgow Symphony Orchestra and Peebles Symphony Orchestra, and sharing stages with artists such as Rod Stewart and Dougie MacLean. In January of this year Roo premiered a new large-scale work at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, commissioned from him by Celtic Connections for this year’s festival. The work was composed throughout a three-month sojourn in India where he was working with the charity Muktangan as well as music schools such as The Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts.

At the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland he was awarded both the distinguished Performance Prize for Jazz and the John McInulty Prize for String Playing. His work with the Irish folk quartet Dallahan and the bluegrass ensemble The Black Denims has taken him around the world, with recent performances in Mexico, the USA, Canada, Spain, Scandinavia, New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia. He was a finalist in the BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2025, and has been recognised with awards including Celtic Connections’ prestigious Danny Kyle Award and Fèis Rois’ “In Tune with Nature” prize. Later this year Roo will perform at festivals such as Celtic Colours in Canada with Roo & Neil and embark on a tour across Mexico, Costa Rica and Brazil with Darach.
