As the school term comes to an end, many families are preparing for a change in routine. 🌞
For some neurodivergent children and young people, transitions like this can feel significant, as routine often plays an important role in feeling settled and regulated. While school can be both positive and challenging in different ways, the move into unstructured time can also bring uncertainty and take time to adjust to.
During the school year, the environment itself can sometimes create barriers such as sensory overload, routine changes and unclear expectations. When systems are built around a “one size fits all” approach, some young people can end up spending more energy coping with the environment than engaging with learning.
Thinking ahead about what helps your young person feel grounded can make this transition into the holidays feel a little easier for everyone involved. Visit www.mindroom.org for further guidance.
