Farm Values

(wider values)
Industrial agriculture is destroying our planet and accelerating the climate crisis, small-scale ecological farming systems offer viable solutions. Ecological farming draws down carbon and minimizes waste, reduces
food miles, removes harmful pesticides, supports biodiversity and brings social benefits. Scotland has one of the most concentrated land ownership patterns in the world creating huge financial and practical barriers to new farmers, whilst perpetuating social inequality and biodiversity loss. Collective and decentralized land ownership models offer a more sustainable and equitable alternative. (Specific to the farm/group)
We operate primarily at a local level for local community benefit, but recognise that we are part of a wider movement tackling global challenges. Bringing projects and people together creates a forum to share skills, knowledge, perspectives and experiences both informally and formally. Access to shared resources and spaces reduces costs and helps build a culture of anti-consumerism, low waste and mutual aid*. Human relationships are central to our well-being, health and happiness. By spending time together and within our community our project fosters social
interactions, friendships and well-being. Collective self-governance and decision making facilitates the sharing of power and responsibility. Autonomy and freedom allow projects on the farm to operate at their own pace in their own way, within collectively defined aims, objectives and values.

*Mutual aid: the voluntary exchange of resources and services for mutual benefit.

*Autonomy: Self-government; freedom to act or function independently.

We were delighted to host Glendelvine primary school's celebration for Attenborough's 100th Birthday. A gorgeous afternoon of film clips, stories, pledges and fun. We love seeing our spaces filled with families learning and connecting.

We hosted a gorgeous family event last week led by https://shop.wisewomenvillage.com

Families came from far and wide to enjoy learning about their bodies and spend time together making twig baskets. We love seeing our spaces used for this sort of fun, holistic and intergenerational learning. Got a project or event you'd like to run on the farm? please get in touch with Community Farm

My name is Johnny and I have been growing vegetables here at Blackhaugh for 10 years, mainly as part of Taybank Growers Cooperative. I also run training courses for people looking to improve their growing skills.

This year I am growing a diverse range of crops for my family, hosting weekly volunteering and running a series of training days on topics such as irrigation, composting and no dig techniques. With my courses I aim to provide training for small-scale and community growers to support more and better local growing. The first couple of these are open for bookings, see links below.

I am a passionate grower with a strong belief that our food systems need to change, both for a healthier planet and healthier people. I believe that communities have the power to pull together and enact change and growing food is one of the most valuable ways we can do this. Everybody deserves access to healthy food that doesn’t carry huge air miles or pesticides. I have a background in environmental activism and ecology; growing food for others, in a way that enhances biodiversity and offers supermarket alternatives combines these two passions. I have spent the last 10 years honing my growing skills, creating efficient systems, running community events, carrying out research and bringing up 2 children with my partner. Last year I focussed on pumpkins, cabbages and sprouts. I am a dedicated “no dig” grower and incorporate my own home made compost and plant feeds.

I am a founding member of Blackhaugh Community Farm and Taybank growers Cooperative. I believe that real change happens on the local scale and taking action in our communities is how we will tackle the biodiversity and climate crises. Access to land is an important issue to me and being based at Blackhaugh Community Farm provides me with an affordable secure tenancy as well as access to shared resources and community collaboration. Making a living from growing food is a huge challenge in a country where supermarkets dominate the food system and households are struggling with the cost of living. With others I am campaigning for support from the Government for local growers and trying to provide people with an alternative.
