Help save this 'forgotten' garden, its natural heritage and long history for future
generations. Granton Castle Walled Garden has stood on the coast of north Edinburgh since the turn of the 16th century and is managed by the community. It is a historic green space where anyone can volunteer or visit. The Friends of Granton Castle Walled Garden run four volunteer and two visitor sessions per week,

alongside a wide range of seasonal workshops (wreath-making, eco-therapy, flower arranging, polytunnel building, tree planting, wassailing). The community garden is a space for collaborative charities to run sessions, and hosts a number of social enterprises, including a flower farm and a mushroom farm. Interested in volunteering with us? 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 is coming to Granton Castle Walled Garden! 🚲🏛️🌿

Something rather special is rolling into the garden on 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟴 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝟭𝗽𝗺!

The National Museums Scotland Museum in Motion cargo bike will be visiting Granton Castle Walled Garden, bringing a bit of the museum out into the community.

The electric cargo bike carries objects from the museum’s handling collection, so you might get to see and explore things like replicas of the Lewis Chess pieces, Pictish chains, Roman helmets and even a 3D-printed chimpanzee skull! 🏺🦴⚔️

Come along, have a look at the bike and discover what’s inside. It’s a great opportunity for local children and families to experience a different side of the museum right here in the garden.

🦋 Moth of the Month: Pied Rabbit 🦋

Welcome to Moth of the Month! Each month, we'll introduce you to a moth you might spot in and around the garden at that time of year.

We're starting with the Pied Rabbit (𝘠𝘱𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘢 𝘴𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢) and we have a question for you:

🐇 Can you spot why this moth is called the Pied Rabbit?

Take a close look at the photo. 👀

The Pied Rabbit is only around 18-20 mm across, but its distinctive black-and-white pattern makes it surprisingly easy to recognise.

🌿 Its caterpillars feed mainly on Field Maple.
🌙 The adults are active at night and are attracted to light.
☀️ It is most often seen in July and August.

This photograph was taken by our moth expert Alyx while trapping and recording moths in the garden as part of our citizen science project monitoring moths and butterflies.

Moths are easy to overlook, but there are all sorts of fascinating species living alongside us. We'll be discovering a new one each month, so keep an eye out for September's moth!
