🎤 SUPPORTING BALERNO HIGH SCHOOL — REAL INTERVIEWS, REAL EXPERIENCE

“Senior pupils… were invited to sign up for face‑to‑face interviews with employers to help them prepare for… future employment.”

As part of our growing partnership with Balerno Community High School, two of our Rotary Community Members — Circle Security and Oriam — stepped in to offer mock job interviews for senior pupils.

Colin Muir (Oriam) and Ian Farmer (Circle Security) conducted 20‑minute interviews, complete with feedback and discussion. The pupils described the experience as helpful, useful and positive — exactly what we hoped for.

🎶 LOCAL TALENT SHINES AT THE ROYAL CONSERVATOIRE OF SCOTLAND

“Pianist Ellie Ho… and vocalist Lily McRae… were selected to go forward to the District Final of the annual Rotary Young Musician competition.”

We’re incredibly proud of Ellie and Lily from Balerno High School, who represented our community at the Rotary Young Musician District Final in Glasgow’s Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Among 14 instrumentalists and 8 vocalists, both delivered outstanding performances at this prestigious venue. They may not have taken home the top prize, but they earned the admiration of the adjudicators, their families, their school — and all of us at Currie Balerno Rotary.

👏 A huge well done to both young musicians. Your talent and dedication inspire us.

Two local primary schools — Dean Park Primary in Balerno and Ratho Primary — have joined forces with Currie Balerno Rotary to support small entrepreneurs in developing countries through the LendwithCare initiative. The project has been met with real enthusiasm from pupils, who are gaining practical insight into global poverty and enterprise.

Currie Balerno Rotary joined in November 2011, becoming the first Rotary club in the UK to participate. The club initially deposited £500 and has since added further contributions from members and supporters. Over the past 25 years, the club has made 578 loans totalling nearly £26,500. Of these, 524 have already been fully repaid, with only a very small number of defaults. Most recipients have been women, using the loans

Well done to the pupils of Balerno High School for making life a bit easier for some families over the festive period by holding a reverse Advent Calendar event in the school. Since the beginning of December they have been bringing in a variety of items and following a meeting with Currie Balerno Rotary Club the pupils decided to donate their collection to Community for Food to support families who have children attending local schools.
A huge thank you to the pupils, parents and staff for supporting this amazing initiative by the young people of BHS. 👏

It is with great sadness that we report the death of John Sellars OBE.
John was a Founder Member of Currie Balerno Rotary in 1981, Club President in 1983-84 and an enthusiastic member throughout the Club’s 44 years.
John was a “Yeller Belly” – a man from Lincolnshire, where he lived until taking up a place at Manchester University to read Physics. He was the first in his family to go to university and it had to be Manchester so that he could watch Manchester United. He had always been a keen sportsman, particularly football and cricket, and always a Manchester United fan, as he remained throughout his life.
He taught in Further Education Colleges in England before coming to Scotland in 1966 as a Senior Lecturer at Napier College. In 1971 he became Depute Principal at West Lothian College and in 1979 he took up post as Depute Director of Education in Lothian Regional Council with responsibility for Further Education, Community Education and the Careers Service.
