Thank you to everyone who came to the meeting today! We hope you found it relatively informative. Keep in mind that all information covered in the Navigation Skills presentation will be revisited when we get to organising hikes next semester (COVID permitting!!)

The Nav Skills PowerPoint will be sent out via email (Facebook doesn’t allow documents to be uploaded...) so keep an eye out for that!!

We look forward to seeing you guys in 2 weeks time for the session on First Aid.

Hi Everyone! Just wanted to remind you all to buy a membership if you haven't already, and to come along to our meeting tonight which will start off with an EGM to vote in a new social secretary and junior hike coordinator.

As a reminder of what the roles require:

Social Secretary: Be in charge of organising our social events for the year to help everyone get to know each other before we hopefully get out on the hills as a group next semester.

Junior Hike Coordinator: Help Chloe plan and organise the walks; supporting with route planning and transport organisation - this is a great way to get involved in the society if you're currently in the process of completing your award, but also if you've already completed your award and still want to stay involved in DofE then this is a great way to do it!

Anybody with a membership to the society is welcome to run for either position, just come prepared to the meeting tonight to tell us all why you think you'd suit the roll!

EU DofE is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Thank you to everyone that came to the meeting today. If you've decided that you'd like to join our gold DofE team then go ahead to our EUSA page where you can purchase the £8 membership. https://www.eusa.ed.ac.uk/activities/societies/society/dofeaward/

We will be sending an email out in the next week to the people who have filled in the expression of interest form. This email will include the information on how to sign up for an eDofE account, as well as the powerpoint that I used in the meeting today as FB isn't letting me upload it to the page.

If you weren't able to attend the meeting today but you'd like to learn more about DofE and potentially join our society then go ahead and fill in the expression of interest form and you'll get access to everything that we talked about today! If you have more questions then message us on here or pop us an email on [email protected]

Hope to see you all soon!

Hi Everyone! Don't forget we have our welcome introductory meeting today at 2pm. If you're interested in starting DofE or just continuing with your award through our society come along and we can let you know what our plans are for the year :)

03/03/2020

We will be holding our AGM on the 10th of March at the usual location (Room G.01, 50 George Square; 1800-2000). At this meeting, all committee roles will be up for election for the next academic year (2020/21).

Those who have paid the £8 membership fee for the society are recommended to attend and vote.

Those who intend on running are encouraged to prepare a short speech laying out why they should be elected.

Details on the positions are given below:

(a) President - Responsibilities: Work closely with the Senior Hike Coordinator to make sure that the expeditions go ahead as planned. Also responsible for making sure that we are doing everything that EUSA needs us to do, and making sure that we are doing DofE the way that the Council needs us to.
Current: Monica Jones

(b) Treasurer - Responsibilities: Handles the society's assets; responsible for bookkeeping and budgeting.
Current: Jacob Matthew Holt

(c) Secretary - Responsibilities: Keeping participants informed about updates and requirements. Logging attendance and participation. Familiarity with Google Drive (spreadsheets, forms) and social media valued.
Current: Callum McGrath

(d) Social Secretary - Responsibilities: Planning socials that incorporate the committee and the society's members. Position requires coordination with the rest of the committee and hence will require a friendly personality and good organisational skills.
Current: Miri Hartley

(e) Senior Hike Coordinator - Responsibilities: The main role is to ensure that every participant has the required knowledge and skills to complete their qualifying Gold expedition. This involves teaching basic navigation, overseeing route-planning, and emphasising campsite safety. You will be required to work independently at times, but will often be working closely with other committee members (like the President). Fulfilling this role necessitates an interest in hill walking and a passion for the outdoors.
Current: Alex Condron

(f) Junior Hike Coordinator - Responsibilities: To organise transportation, and to shadow, learn from, and work alongside the Senior Hike Coordinator to provide the appropriate information to participants and the Council. Essentially a 2 (preferably 3) year role due to the nature of learning on the job, from both the Council and SHC.
Current: Chloe Tunnell

(g) Award Coordinator - Responsibilities: Primary point of approval for the University of Edinburgh Gold Award participants' sections. Encouraging participation and ensuring participants have the required evidence and meet their section requirements for the Gold Award.
Current: Yazmin Conn

This is a reminder that tonight's meeting will be devoted to route planning. Please remember to bring your laptops so that you can access the eDofE mapping tool.

12/11/2019

During class time this evening (18:00-19:00) we'll be going over bag packing, what kit is required for a DofE hike and kit hire, so that we can start forming a list of what items need to be rented, plus any other queries you may have! This is instead of route planning which is no longer possible during tonight session!
Tonight's session is not mandatory but advised for anyone who is new to hillwalking or requires kit. It's likely some members will have double the kit i.e. multiple role mats, extra head torches - if this is the case and you are willing to share let us know, you'd be helping a few people out!😄
Looking forward to seeing you all- The DofE team

Cramond island and Almond river

hey guys, another opportunity presents itself this Sunday for a quick getaway to the small island of cramond. we'll be taking the number 41 bus from The mound bus stop to Cramond at 10:10. the plan is to walk along the river almond, visit the island at low-tide and get back at around 2:30/3.
This is a low-cost, fun way to get outdoors and work off those hangovers! hope to see you all there, yours truly, Alex xo
