Angels in America at the King’s Theatre🎭

Over the past week, we’ve been at the production of 'Angels in America' at the King’s Theatre, speaking to audiences about how much has changed in HIV treatment and prevention since the time in which the play is set.

Having a presence at the show has given us the opportunity to have conversations with people who may never have heard of us or our work before, sharing information about U=U, PrEP and PEP, and challenging some of the misconceptions and stigma that still surround HIV today.

While 'Angels in America' reflects a very different time in the history of HIV, these conversations have been an important reminder that awareness still matters. Today, with effective treatment, people living with HIV can live full and healthy lives and cannot pass HIV on through s*x when they have an undetectable viral load.

A huge thank you to everyone who has stopped by our stall, asked questions and had a conversation with us during the run.

A huge thank you to The National Lottery Fund for awarding £20,000 to support Raise the Curtain, our creative partnership with the Edinburgh Playhouse as part of our HIV ALOUD programme. 💜

Raise the Curtain has brought together 28 people living with HIV from across Edinburgh, Glasgow and Fife through workshops and conversations, creating a space to build confidence in sharing their stories and experiences.

Working with writer Drew Taylor-Wilson, these conversations have helped shape Going Viral – a co-created script exploring HIV, stigma and what it means to live well with HIV today. Last month, the project reached an exciting milestone as the script was brought to life in a table read by five professional actors.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has trusted us with their stories and helped shape this project, to the Edinburgh Playhouse for creating this space alongside us, and to The National Lottery Community Fund for making it possible.

Through projects like Raise the Curtain, people living with HIV can build confidence, share their experiences and challenge the stigma that still surrounds HIV today.

🏳️‍⚧️ More flexibility at our Trans and Non-Binary Community Clinic in Edinburgh!

On selected dates, we’ll now be running both an afternoon and evening clinic on the same day, giving you more choice about when you can access our s*xual health services.

Our next clinic is Thursday 20 August, with both sessions available:

☀️ Afternoon: 1pm–4pm
🌙 Evening: 4:30pm–6:30pm

Our clinic is an inclusive and welcoming space where you can access s*xual health testing, PrEP consultations, contraception, cervical screening, and speak to a clinician about any other s*xual health concerns.

Protect Your Liver, Protect Your Health 💜

This year's theme, "Let's Break It Down," is all about removing the barriers that stop people accessing information, testing and support.

This morning, we focused on breaking down common misconceptions about hepatitis. Now, we're highlighting where you can access trusted information, practical support and testing across Scotland with Waverley Care.

Our Health Improvement Team has also been out in communities across the West of Scotland throughout July, raising awareness of hepatitis B and hepatitis C, promoting testing, and sharing information about prevention and support.

Whether you're a GP receptionist, dentist, nurse, pharmacist, support worker, social worker or any other health and social care worker, the care you provide can have a lasting impact on someone living with HIV.

In this video, Emma, our Senior Learning & Engagement Officer, shares why having up-to-date knowledge about HIV is so important. When people living with HIV are met with informed, person-centred and stigma-free care, they are more likely to feel respected, understood and confident accessing the support they need.

That's why HIV Informed was created – a free online learning hub developed by Waverley Care in partnership with the Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland.

With three short learning modules, it's designed to fit around busy working lives while helping you build the knowledge and confidence to provide inclusive, informed care.
