Pride means showing up for one another with care, compassion and action.

This Pride Month, we’re challenging stigma, sharing facts and standing with people living with HIV across Scotland because everyone deserves to be seen, heard and cared for.

Together, we care louder.

Could you use your lived experience to support someone living with HIV?

This Volunteer Week, we’re highlighting Waverley Care’s Peer Support volunteer role and inviting people living with HIV to get involved.

Peer Support is at the heart of what we do, connecting people to someone who understands what it’s like to live with HIV through shared lived experience.

From one-to-one conversations and clinic support to helping people navigate diagnosis, disclosure or treatment, Peer Support volunteers help ensure no one faces HIV alone.

As one service user shared:“From the moment I sat down with a peer supporter, I felt understood for the first time… Their empathy, patience and support helped me process the shock and confusion.”

Volunteering as a Peer Supporter can also be hugely rewarding, with opportunities for training, accredited courses, ongoing support, and involvement in community, education, and activism work.

If you’re passionate about supporting others and helping challenge HIV stigma, we’d love to hear from you.

In the month of May, we were delighted to host creative writing workshops in both Edinburgh and Glasgow in partnership with and the University of Stirling, 💜

With 15 attendees across both sessions, the workshops created a supportive space for people to explore new ways of sharing their stories, build confidence in talking about HIV, and make meaningful new connections with peers.

Each participant also received a copy of the Our Stories Told By Us Journal to help continue with their writing beyond the workshops.

A huge thank you to Angelina and Rebecca from Our Stories Told By Us for facilitating such inspiring sessions!

This week, we’re celebrating the incredible volunteers who give their time, skills and compassion to Waverley Care. Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do, and we couldn’t do it without you. 💜

From supporting people living with HIV and hepatitis to helping at events, marching with us at Pride, supporting community groups, and helping shape our work as trustees and board members, your impact is felt across every part of our organisation.

Volunteers have always been part of Waverley Care’s story. What began during the early days of the HIV epidemic continues today through people coming together to challenge stigma, build community, and support one another.

To every one of our volunteers, thank you for everything you do.
