Scotland's museums and galleries protect our heritage and connect communities with culture. But behind the scenes, many are facing immense pressure... and leadership and innovation are key to a thriving future.

Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS), the sector's national development body, spotted the gap years ago. People join museums for their passion for history and collections, not because they want to manage teams.

Yet many get promoted into leadership roles with little training to support them.

So MGS partnered with us to build something different: a leadership programme designed specifically for museum professionals.

John Campbell, Skills Development Manager at Museums Galleries Scotland share with us:

β€œPeople need the confidence and skills to manage teams, plan strategically and diversify income. Leadership is absolutely critical to that. Without effective leadership, you will be unable to operate a thriving organisation.”

Together we built a programme covering self-awareness and leadership style, emotional intelligence, managing change, and influencing upwards - with ILM accreditation and a pathway into further study at Napier University.

The results speak for themselves:

β†’ 2+ cohorts delivered every year, 12-15 participants each
β†’ 99% positive feedback across 16-20 courses
β†’ Participants reporting promotions within a year
β†’ Genuine peer networks across a sector that's often siloed

"That feeling of empowerment and self-confidence is huge," John says.

As MGS launches Museum Futures - a Β£4m Scottish Government initiative to help museums build sustainable futures - leadership development matters more than ever.

Because when leaders grow, the whole sector grows with them.
