Many thanks to the many volunteers who turned out on Saturday to help us build over 30 bird boxes for the feathered πŸͺΆ Friends of Campbell Park.

The will be installed during our next & volunteers morning on the morning of 12 December 2025.

In this photo, Harris (6), Arran (11), Finlay (13) and John McLure (44) were rightly proud of the supersized birdboxes for Starlings they made, using donated wood from . πŸ‘

They seemed pretty pleased with their four creations too. πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘

Despite our orchard trees being stripped of fruit early on (by someone not very community minded) we are very fortunate to have many kind neighbours happy to share surplus fruit from their own gardens. So please help yourself to a few apples from the new harvest fruit sharing table in Campbell Park. 🍎 🍎 🍎

As September wanes, asters are waxing, their starburst petals lighting up the region's old pastures and woodland edges in shades of pink, purple, and white. Many species that have "aster" in their common name have recently been sorted into other genera, including Symphyotrichum, Doellingeria, Eurybia, and Ionactis, but they still belong to the aster family (Asteraceae). Members of the aster family share a unique type of inflorescence consisting of many tiny flowers clustered in a flower head that forms a false "flower." The individual flowers can be one of several types, most commonly ray and disk flowers. The showy, sterile ray flowers act as "petals" to attract insects, while the central disk flowers, which contain the reproductive organs, can be male and then female to ensure pollination as insects forage for pollen and nectar. This division of labor within the flower head enables increased efficiency in attracting and interacting with pollinators. So when you see a familiar aster, take a closer lookβ€”and marvel at another evolutionary adaptation that links plants and pollinators.

Who knew that slate collars would be quite SO effective at keeping couch grass out of the fruit tree guilds in our community orchard? They make w**ding so much more fun.

Hey people, we don't know about you, but we think are doing a great job campaigning for a "pesticide free Edinburgh". πŸ‘

They're very close to achieving their target of 4000 petition signatures to give to The City of Edinburgh Council. Let's help them get their petition over the line. πŸ™

Please sign and share the Pesticide Free Edinburgh Petition, asking for safe alternatives .

Edinburgh City Council use pesticides for w**d control on our streets, pavements, parks, playgrounds, around schools, cemeteries and green spaces. Pesticide use has multiple harmful effects on human and animal health and causes environmental pollution and degradation. The notorious chemical Glyphosa...

This weekend is your LAST chance to join in the 2025 Big Butterfly Count, running until 10 August 2025 and we're giving away free apples to everyone who takes part in our community orchard!

Simply download the Big Butterfly Count 2025 app to your mobile phone and head down to the Friends of Campbell Park orchard to choose your favourite sit spot.

Please don't pick fruit hanging on the trees when there's so much ripe fruit on the ground waiting to be eaten. There are 18 apple trees, and at least a dozen are dropping apples now. Feel free to try a few and tell us which trees taste the best. πŸ™ 🍎 πŸ˜‹
