After a hectic year, ESUFG is now starting the process of electing a new committee for the oncoming year. All positions are up for grabs, and the current person filling that position has been tagged.
If you are interested in joining, please fill out the form linked in our bio. There, you can provide your position preference, contact details and tell us a bit more about yourself. After 2 weeks, we will then carry out a 24 hour voting procedure where the new committee will be elected! The new committee will be announced on the 4th April.

As we are a relatively new society, we are extremely keen to see faces new and old running for committee positions! If you have come along to our talks this year, tracked our insight posts, enjoyed the socials or have an interesting idea of what our society could represent, why not run?

Come along to our virtual talk and Q&A!
Free tickets available via our EUSA (link in bio)

Rae is an architect working for SOM and a Committee Member for the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. This Council is the international authority on tall buildings and is playing an increasingly important role in advocating for vertical urbanism and sustainable building practices. Rae will be outlining the concept of ‘vertical urbanism’ and the surrounding debate around building ‘up’ vs. ‘out’. She will also be sharing some of the work she has conducted with the Council on Tall Buildings, SOM and Urban Sequoia.

Week 1 is finally upon us, meaning that our ‘weekly insights’ programme is officially launched! Each week, we will be diving into a different topic related to sustainability in the built environment. We are hoping that, with this programme, we can stimulate the varying interests of each of our members and introduce them to the huge scope of ideas that our society encompasses. This week, we introduce Kowloon Walled City, an ex-enclave of Hong Kong that is of significant architectural, historical and political fascination. The post will track Kowloon’s journey from a military outpost to curb British incursion into the New Territories; through its time under ‘hands-off’ Chinese jurisdiction and de facto Triad leadership; and its eventual demolition as the British colonial enterprise drew to a close.
NOTE: This post has deliberately excluded certain contemporary developments in China-Hong Kong and China-UK relations, including recent legislative reforms and the 2019 Hong Kong Protests. We have not mentioned the Sino-British Joint Declaration and the special administrative region to express any particular stance on the matter, but rather to situate these developments against the history of Kowloon. We understand that an Instagram post is not an appropriate or sufficient means of discussing these matters.

Last night we got together at the wonderful to watch Koyaanisqatsi, an experimental film made up of time-lapse and slow motion footage of American landscapes. After the film we had a discussion about the nature of urban life and what we, as students and tenants, can do to develop community through activism.

Come join us for our next event! Watch out for an announcement about our upcoming AGM in April.

Join us for a chilled filmnight at ilium_shop 🎥

We are going to be watching Koyaanisqatsi!
A film about environmentalism, urbanism and our way of (not) seeing what’s in front of us.

Afterwards, we’ll have a relaxed chat about the film 🍿

The EGM tonight will be hosted over Microsoft Teams, and begins at 17:30.
You will be asked to speak for around 30 seconds on what appeals to you about the society and what you think you can bring - nothing major, just so we get to know you a bit more!

Also, please make sure to sign up as a member of the ESUFG via the official EUSA page (see previous post for a link) - this will keep everything above board and ensure that the EGM meets the minimum quorum requirements outlined in the constitution.

Good luck to everyone, and we will see you then!
