Twitter: A young carer is a young person who provides practical/emotional support to another person, due to their ill-health, mental/physical disability, long term illness or drug or alcohol abuse. Some of the issues young carers face can include:
• Feelings of guilt, anger or isolation.
• Feeling lonely and missing out on social activities.
• Struggling to manage on a low income.
• Having trouble taking part in educational activities or work.
• Feeling physically tired and sore from heavy lifting. Our service aims to identify and support young carers. We can offer:
• One to one time with a Project Worker: Your Project Worker will help you to identify what you want to achieve and support you to seek opportunities for education, employment or leisure.
• Group sessions
These give you the opportunity to meet with other young carers, have fun and take a break from your caring role.
• Information and advice
We can help you access other services which may be able to provide you with additional support, practically, emotionally or financially. This can include benefits advice.
• Training
We can help you to access training that you may need for your caring role, or your own personal development. This can include moving and handling training, mental health awareness training and dementia training, among many others. You can contact us by filling out a self-referral form or you can be referred by a 3rd party organisation (e.g. school, social work). Our referral forms can be found on our website.
