Public service workers show up for us – now it’s the government’s turn to show up for them.

Every day, public service workers show up for all of us. They care for our loved ones, keep our streets and communities safe, support children and families, respond to emergencies, maintain our public spaces and keep essential services running.

It is time to bail out public services – they are at breaking point and the people who keep them going cannot keep doing more with less.

We are calling on the government to show up for public services in the budget.

📣 FOR INFORMATION 📣

Over the past six weeks, over 200,000 UNISON members working in councils and schools in England and Cymru were balloted for industrial action, in response to the employers’ offer of a 3.3% pay increase for 2026/27.

A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to vote in the ballot and thank you to all members for your patience during this period. We know how frustrating it can be to await updates on your pay.

While the votes that were returned were overwhelmingly in favour of action, we did not cross the 50% turnout threshold in enough employers to have the impact we would need to secure an improved offer.

In light of this and alongside the other unions representing council and school staff, we wrote to the employers reluctantly accepting the 3.3% offer. The employers and unions have now written jointly to individual employers asking them to implement the 3.3% uplift, with pay backdated to 1 April, as soon as possible.

UNISON’s attention will now turn to the 2027 pay round. We want to get the pay claim in as soon as possible so that we can secure the best offer possible for next year.

As usual, we’ll be consulting members on what they want to see in the pay claim, so look out for communication from your branch during the autumn.

Extreme heat at work:

In recent years, the UK has experienced shifts in typical weather patterns. While there is no maximum workplace temperature in the UK, the law mandates that “During working hours, the temperature in all workplaces inside buildings shall be reasonable.”

UNISON supports the TUC’s call for a specific legal maximum temperature for indoor work of 30°C, or 27°C for strenuous work.
