Children's Burns Trust

Children's Burns Trust Children's Burns Trust is a charity dedicated to providing rehabilitation support for burn injuries Why does the UK need a charity like ours?

We make a positive difference in three ways:

- Raising awareness of burns and scalds to children with PREVENTION campaigns;
- Working with NHS professionals to provide direct help and funding for REHABILITATION;
- Giving direct financial SUPPORT to families and hospitals, providing advice on how to access burn-related information. A burn injury is for life. Being burned or scalded as a child mean

s years of painful treatment and in the worst cases hundreds of operations to release the scar tissue as they grow. The psychological impact of a burn injury is also immense, particularly when burn survivors reach their teenage years and have to cope with self-image and self-confidence issues. We are the only UK children’s charity working nationally who are devoted solely to these areas.

As children grow, the burn risks around them change.

Children aged 0-1 may be at risk from hot drinks being carried over them and bath water

Children aged 1-4 are naturally curious and may reach, pull or climb towards hazards, including hot drinks, appliances and dangling cords.

As children aged 5-10 become more independent, new risks can appear around kitchens, hair and beauty tools, radiators, heaters and outdoor spaces.

For children aged 12-18, increased independence can bring additional risks around cooking, heated appliances, candles and fireworks.

☀️ Seasonal activities can also introduce different burn risks throughout the year, from BBQs, fire pits and sun exposure in summer to fireworks, hot water bottles and heaters during colder months.

This , we are supporting families and practitioners with practical burn prevention advice that reflects real life and every stage of childhood.

Prevention is possible when advice feels clear, realistic and easy to act on.

372 children were admitted to Specialist Burns Services across the UK with severe burns caused by hot drinks between January and March 2026.

These are not minor injuries treated in A&E. These figures represent children whose injuries were serious enough to require specialist burns care.

Many hot drink burns happen during everyday moments at home. A mug pulled from a table edge. A spill from a nearby drink. A trailing kettle cord.

Small changes can help prevent devastating injuries:
☕ Keep hot drinks out of reach
☕ Avoid placing drinks near edges
☕ Turn kettle cords away from children
☕ Never carry a hot drink while holding a child

Burn injuries can have lifelong physical and emotional impact, which is why prevention and awareness remain so important.

After taking part in the Birmingham Running Festival, Marko and Bryony are continuing their fundraising for Children’s Burns Trust.

On 14 June, they will be running the Cheltenham Running Festival, with Bryony taking on the 10km and Marko the half marathon.

Last year, their son Otis experienced a serious burn injury after pulling a cup of hot tea over himself. It was a moment that changed everything.

Thanks to the care and support they received, Otis has made a strong recovery.

Now, they are continuing to raise funds and awareness to support other families.

We are so grateful for their ongoing support.

A Day in the Life of a Burns Physiotherapist 💙

As part of our 25 year anniversary, we are sharing the stories of the professionals working within UK Burn Services.

Meet Louise Johnson, a Burns Physiotherapist at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle, who has spent over 20 years supporting children and adults following a burn injury.

Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in recovery. Louise supports patients to regain movement and confidence, often working alongside them during dressing changes and encouraging them through the challenges of rehabilitation.

Her story highlights the importance of teamwork, consistency and support in helping patients rebuild their lives after a burn injury.

When Bella experienced a serious burn injury in 2024, her family faced a journey no one expects.

With support from Children’s Burns Trust, they were able to access help and guidance during a very difficult time.

Now, her dad Thomas, one of our ambassadors, is taking on a 45 mile walk across Dartmoor, retracing the journey from Exeter to Derriford Hospital.

He will be joined by two friends, each carrying a 10kg backpack, which was the weight of Bella at the time of her burn injury, turning a difficult memory into something positive.

We are so proud to see Thomas giving back and helping raise awareness for other families.

If you are able to donate, any support will make a difference.

94 children were admitted to Specialist Burns Services across the UK with severe burns caused by hair straighteners between January and March 2026.

These figures represent children whose injuries were serious enough to require specialist burns care and do not include the thousands more children treated and discharged from A&E departments each year.

Data like this highlights the continued importance of prevention, education and awareness around childhood burn injuries.

Hair straighteners and heated styling tools remain a common cause of serious burns in children, often because appliances stay dangerously hot even after use.

At Children’s Burns Trust, we continue to work alongside NHS burns services and partners across the UK to help reduce preventable burn injuries through education, awareness campaigns and family support.

Prevention starts with small actions:
• Unplug straighteners immediately after use
• Allow appliances to cool safely out of reach
• Keep hot styling tools away from children
• Avoid leaving heated appliances unattended

Children’s skin needs extra protection, but the good news is that sunburn is preventable.

Simple steps like staying in the shade, using SPF 50+, covering up, and wearing a hat can help keep children safe.

Checking the UV index and planning ahead can also make a big difference.
