The Safe Home Scheme operates within Hampshire & Isle of Wight. As well as home visits we can attend community groups to give talks on both services.

Improving community safety with free home security visits and provided equipment to help protect your home, plus free internet safety support for older and vulnerable people. It offers free home safety and security visits for the vulnerable and older people, providing practical advice and physical items to enhance safety and security. We also operate the Safe Online service which provides basic cyber security advice to vulnerable and older residents. Halloween should be fun - but remember, not everyone wants a knock at the door.

For many people, Halloween is an evening of costumes, pumpkins and trick-or-treating. But unexpected callers after dark can also be unsettling or frightening for some members of our communities.

If you’re heading out trick-or-treating tonight:
- Respect homes displaying a No Trick or Treat sign
- Consider only visiting homes that are clearly taking part
- Young children should be accompanied by a responsible adult
- Stay together and stick to well-lit areas
- Be considerate of neighbours who may not wish to participate

If you’re staying at home and don’t feel comfortable answering an unexpected caller, you don’t have to open the door. Check who is there using a window, spyhole or video doorbell if available.

As October draws to a close, the Blue Lamp Trust is thanking Peter Cooper Motor Group for its £5,000 support.

The contribution supports a month of Mick’s Safe Home work across the Southampton-to-Portsmouth area, bringing practical safety and security support to vulnerable residents.

On 29th October, we celebrate one of the most influential inventions in modern history🌐

Today is Internet Day, marking an important moment in its development, when one of the first messages was sent between two computers in 1969.

Since then, the internet has completely changed the way we live - helping us stay in touch, shop, bank, book appointments, access information and connect with services.

It has come a long way in just a few decades.

But as more of everyday life moves online, it’s also important to feel confident and know how to stay safe.

That includes knowing how to:
- Protect your personal information
- Recognise suspicious messages and emails
- Spot common scams
- Use online services with greater confidence

Introducing Graeme Hobbs FREng, Vice Patron of the Blue Lamp Trust.

Graeme has a long-standing connection with the Blue Lamp Trust, having served as Chair for nine years before stepping down in October 2025.

He is currently Chair of the Smith Institute and an Independent Director of the IET’s subsidiary companies, bringing extensive experience in leadership, engineering and corporate engagement.

We’re delighted that Graeme has continued his involvement with the Trust as a Vice Patron, where he will support our work by helping to strengthen relationships with businesses and organisations that share our commitment to protecting vulnerable people in our communities.

We’re incredibly grateful for Graeme’s continued support and look forward to working with him in this new role.

The clocks go back this weekend⏰

At 2am on Sunday 25th October, the clocks go back by one hour - bringing lighter mornings, but much earlier evenings.

As our routines adjust, it’s also a useful reminder to think about home security after dark.
- Adjust timers or smart lights to match the new daylight hours
- Get into the habit of securing doors and windows before it gets dark
- Check that entrances, pathways and outdoor areas have adequate lighting
- If you’re going to be out during the evening, think about whether your home will appear occupied

Small adjustments to our routines can make a difference as we head into the darker months.

How secure is your front door?

October is National Home Security Month - a good opportunity to review the simple measures that help keep our homes safe and secure.

Your front door is one of the best places to start.

Take a few minutes to check:
- Are your door and locks in good working order?
- Can you see who is outside before opening the door?
- Are house and car keys kept away from doors, windows and letterboxes?
- Is your entrance well lit?
- Do you routinely lock your door, even when you’re at home?

Small changes and good everyday habits can make a real difference.
