Film Night at The Hilt - THE ROSES
Sat 28th February

THIS FILM IS BEING SHOWN ON SATURDAY 28th FEBRUARY AND NOT THE USUAL FRIDAY.

Directed by Jay Roach and written by Tony McNamara, The Roses (2025) is a polarising satirical black comedy that updates Warren Adler’s novel for a modern audience. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as Theo and Ivy Rose, the film reimagines the 1989 classic The War of the Roses as a slow-burn dissection of a marriage in decay, triggered when Theo’s architectural career fails while Ivy’s success as a chef begins to soar.

Critics widely praise the "electric" chemistry and witty "acerbic" dialogue delivered by the leads. However, the film has faced criticism for tonal inconsistencies, with some reviewers finding it "toothless" or "too cruel" compared to the original. While the supporting cast—including Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, and Allison Janney—provides comedic energy, some critics found their presence distracting or poorly utilised.
