Did you know that most of the green fields that you see as you drive through the British countryside are almost completely devoid of wildlife? Modern farming favours grasslands with just one or two grass species and this is unable to support many birds or animals. However, our ancient wildlife-rich grasslands can have a hundred or more species of flowers and are often alive with butterflies and bi

rds. In the last 70 years more than 98% of our wildflower meadows have been destroyed, a habitat that supports many of our best loved species-birds such as the barn owl, skylack and lapwing; mammals like the hare; plants such as the green-winged orchid; and many types of butterfly and bumblebee.
