At the heart of the Wirral, Great Britain, K9 International’s Training Academy—based at The Seven Stars Sanctuary—offers a unique and life-changing opportunity for military veterans through its fully funded Canine Management Courses.

Designed specifically for those who have served, these programmes provide hands-on experience working with a dedicated pack of highly trained therapy and protection German Shepherds. Veterans don’t just attend—they become part of a supportive, purpose-driven environment where teamwork, trust, and personal development are at the core.

The academy delivers a structured pathway to recognised certification and qualifications across a wide range of canine welfare and management disciplines. Drawing inspiration from the standards of the Royal Veterinary Corps’ military dog handling programmes, course modules include:

* Canine welfare and first aid
* Nutrition and grooming
* Kennelling and exercise routines
* Equipment use and safe handling
* Obedience and behavioural training
* Relaxation and therapeutic interaction
* Tracking, walking, and protection work
* Safe transportation and operational care

Each course is tailored to the individual, making it especially beneficial for veterans living with PTSD, those seeking to rebuild confidence and routine, or anyone looking to develop new skills and a deeper connection with dogs.

More than just training, this is a pathway to renewed purpose, wellbeing, and community.

Led by Master K9 Trainer Brian McKinney, and supported by a network of respected organisations—including K9 International UK, the British Therapy K9 Association, and British K9 Warriors—the academy stands as a testament to the power of rehabilitation through canine partnership.

Empowering veterans. Transforming lives. Building futures—together with K9s. 🇬🇧

This Evening…. Phil volunteering with Veterans Dave and Steve, caring for and feeding our Pack of Protection K9s
My great friend and one of our Sanctuary Military Veterans, Phil Sandland-Jones finally received his Long Service & Good Conduct Medal this week.
Thirty odd years late!
Phil served eighteen years in the 3rd and 1st Parachute Regiment leaving as a Corporal (although qualified as Sergeant Major, he was unable to fulfill the higher rank because of injuries sustained during his service)
His medal accompanies his Falklands War medal and others.
Phil is a valued member of our Veteran Volunteers

🇬🇧British Military Dogs🇬🇧
Dogs do not “formally” hold military ranks in the British Armed Forces.
However, they are often given honorary or informal ranks such as Corporal, Sergeant, Sergeant Major etc.
British military dogs ALWAYS outrank their handlers (in an informal way).
They are always considered one rank higher than their handlers
This is to ensure that they are given respect and treated with care by their handlers
Handlers can be punished for mistreating a dog, reinforcing the idea that the dog is “above” them.
A handler faces quite severe punishment/consequences if caught mistreating his dog. Similar to disrespecting an officer or NCO.
This “rank” idea ensures a strong respectful bond between the handler and his dog and correct treatment
If the dog is injured, ill or dirty through mistreatment or neglect the handler faces severe disciplinary action
Some dogs are given a much higher honorary rank depending on their service record

In this tradition the Sanctuary Military Veterans (Patrons of the Siebensterne Pack) refer to each of our dogs by rank.
So for example when the Veterans are letting our dogs through to sleep in the indoor kennel facility each evening it goes something like…
Veteran 1: over radio “ Sergeant Gunther on his way”
Reply from Veteran 2: “ Sergeant Gunther safely kennelled
Or in Max’s case “ Sergeant-Major Max inbound” etc.

I love the respect and love given by the Veterans to the Siebensterne’s Pack. They provide their time to ensure the Pack have the best diet, kennel hygiene, grooming, exercise and training.
Their kennels are meticulously maintained in a military fashion
Their kit consisting of various collars, leads, harnesses etc is always clean and bulled to a high standard including the brass fittings especially when they are on Parade for a special event such as Remembrance Day

Many thanks to the K9 Team of Military Veterans : including Neil Dempsey, Dave Davidson, Steve Jenkins, Bob Hughes, Laimis Augustaitis et al
