Our History
In the late 1940's and early

1950's, some Lodges in the Province of Sussex had over 100 members. Progression to the Master's Chair was not guaranteed and it certainly took quite a long time for Brethren to achieve the most rewarding offices. Tyrian Lodge No. 1110 had 110 members in 1950, and a number of Brethren of that distinguished old Sussex Lodge were concerned enough to do something about it. There were 11 Brethren present, and at that meeting it was decided that Tyrian should be asked to be the sponsoring Lodge, and that W.Bro. Sydney Addison should be asked to be the Charter Master of the new Lodge. Addison's portrait now adorns the ante-room at our Temple in South Street. He was possibly the most prominent Mason in Eastbourne at that time. It was decided that the number of founders should be limited to 25. Amongst the names suggested for this new Lodge were Devonshire, Saffrons, and Eastbourne. There were 10 candidates named for consideration as Initiates and within a month, all 25 founders had been chosen. The petition was presented to Tyrian Lodge on 30th October 1950. At the consecration meeting, the Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. The V.Revd A.T.A. Naylor DSO, OBE, MA. Dean of Battle, set a tradition in the Lodge by suggesting that the Masonic Temple in Eastbourne would not be big enough for the Consecration Ceremony, and therefore the Assembly Room at the Town Hall was booked. Eastbourne Lodge was consecrated on 1st February 1951. Over 300 Brethren attended the Ceremony, and our Installation Meetings have been held at the Assembly Room ever since. We are proud that we are the only Lodge in Eastbourne to do so, and to regularly have attendances which merit such a venue.

February 1951: Tradition and Resolve
Eastbourne Lodge No. 7057 is consecrated. The atmosphere is one of quiet dignity, reflecting a post-war Britain where fraternal organisations offered stability, moral guidance, and community. These Freemasons, having lived through the trials of World War II, carried forward rituals steeped in centuries of symbolism. Their gathering was not just ceremonial—it was a reaffirmation of values: charity, integrity, and brotherhood.

February 2026: Continuity and Renewal
Fast forward 75 years to reveal a lodge that has evolved while preserving its core identity. The regalia remains, but the faces reflect a more diverse and modern membership with contemporary perspectives: digital literacy, global awareness, and a commitment to community service. Freemasonry in 2026 is no longer cloaked in mystery but engaged in outreach, mentorship, and civic involvement. The lodge is a place where tradition meets transformation.

High Fives for Sussex Freemasons

Eastbourne Lodge No. 7057 in Sussex marked a remarkable milestone this week as the Lodge welcomed five new members into Sussex Freemasonry during its latest meeting.

Traditionally, the Ceremony of Initiation is regarded as a personal and deeply meaningful experience for a single candidate. However, Eastbourne Lodge members say that Initiating five candidates together created a powerful shared moment, one that fostered an immediate sense of unity and support among the new Brethren.

“Rather than feeling isolated, each candidate was able to begin their Masonic journey alongside others sharing the same experience,” a Lodge representative explained. “This collective start helps strengthen their confidence, connection, and progression going forward.”

Bringing five Initiates through the ceremony in a single evening was no small feat. It required careful coordination, extensive preparation and the combined efforts of many dedicated members. But the outcome, the Lodge says, was well worth the hard work.

With spirits high and membership growing, Eastbourne Lodge No. 7057 hopes this memorable evening will inspire further engagement across Sussex Freemasonry.

Indeed, when it comes to welcoming new members, it seems the Lodge has proven that sometimes…it’s the more, the merrier.
