Care for the Carers

Care for the Carers Care for the Carers is an independent charity supporting unpaid carers in East Sussex.

Care for the Carers is an independent charity which supports unpaid carers in East Sussex who look after a relative, friend or neighbour who is frail, disabled, and/or has a long term illness. We are the Carers’ Centre for East Sussex and an affiliate of the Princess Royal Trust for Carers’ national network of Carers’ Centres. As the Carers Centre for East Sussex, we aim to support and empower car

ers throughout the county by offering information, practical and emotional advice, groups, activities, events and a range of services that are specifically tailored to the needs of East Sussex carers and only carers. We also work closely with other organisations in East Sussex who work with carers. We have built a good relationship with Partners in the Statutory and Voluntary sectors and are actively involved in the planning, delivery and monitoring of carers’ services to ensure that their specific needs are met and that carers’ voices are heard. Our aims:

- To empower carers to be involved in decisions and making choices that affect their lives.
- To ensure that carers are recognised and valued.
- To inform carers of their rights and help them to access the services and support to which they are entitled.
- To enable carers to acquire skills, knowledge and understanding of their role as a carer.
- To enable carers to access a good quality of life within and outside caring (to include health and well-being, leisure, education and employment). Where English is not your first language, we can arrange for an interpreter to help us communicate with you, including using a telephone interpreter to discuss what support you need. To request that we call you using a telephone interpreter who speaks your language. Send us a text, email or letter with your contact and language details, or ask an English-speaking friend to call us on your behalf. We’ll arrange for one of our team to call you using a telephone interpreting service.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a rare red Heat Health Alert, covering the whole of the South East.

This is in effect between 1am Wednesday 24 June and 11pm Thursday 25 June.

During heatwaves, more people than usual can become seriously ill. Heat-related illness affects vulnerable people, such as those aged 65 and over, children under 5 years old and people who have serious long-term conditions.

To avoid heat-related illness
🫗 drink plenty of fluids
😎 keep out of the sun
🏃 🏃 avoid any exercise between 11am-3pm
🙅 close curtains in rooms that face the sun.

If you are going out take water with you, stay in the shade, wear sunscreen and a wide brimmed hat.

Olivia is one of 8,000 young carers in East Sussex.

For young carers like Olivia, the summer holidays don't mean a carefree holiday. Young carers continue to care for loved ones, every day, while their friends enjoy the break.

Care for the Carers depends on donations to be able to offer Young Carers Holiday Clubs and days out across East Sussex.

UPDATE :There is an Amber Heat Alert in place for East Sussex until 11pm Friday 26 June.

Those over 65, babies and children under 5, people with underlying health conditions, people on certain medications and individuals with serious mental health issues are among the most at risk groups in the heat.

💡 Actions you can take to keep yourself and others safe in hot weather...
- Keep your home cool by closing windows and curtains in rooms that face the sun
- Drink plenty of fluids and limit your alcohol intake
- Check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell, and if you are at higher risk, ask them to do the same for you
- Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and what to do if you or someone else has them
- Try to avoid direct sunlight, especially between 11am and 3pm when UV levels are highest
- If you are going out during this time, cover up with suitable clothing, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, seek shade and apply sunscreen liberally and re-apply frequently

📞 If you’re concerned about your health or someone else's, call NHS 111.

The Annual Carers Voices Survey 2026 is open!

Let us know what you think about the support you have received from us and services you would like us to offer. And importantly, how your caring role affects you.

The survey results form an important part of the East Sussex Carers Voices Report which is published on Carers Rights Day in November. We use this to influence decision makers and those who deliver services with and for carers, including our own planning.

The survey can be found at bit.ly/VoicesSurvey26
