Guide Dogs seeks South Lanarkshire locals interested in opening their hearts and homes to one of our dogs.

Puppy raisers play a vital part in a guide dog’s journey, welcoming a young puppy into their home for the first 12-16 months and providing the basic training, socialisation and care it needs during its early development. No previous experience is required, and with costs of food and vet bills covered, it’s an affordable way of having canine companionship. There are also opportunities to help shorter term with the puppies as a fosterer.

If you’d like to get involved with our dogs in training, we have opportunities available for Training Dog Fosterers, who do the ‘school run’ daily, dropping the dog off week days at our site in Hamilton so they can undertake their training, and collecting them in the evening, so you and your family can enjoy the company of a dog during evenings and weekends, even if you’re out all day. We also seek respite homes for dogs who are not undergoing training, which means the daily drop off in Hamilton is not required.

If anyone would like to get involved, but couldn’t commit to supporting our dogs, our fundraising groups in Biggar, East Kilbride and Hamilton would welcome members whether they can help for an hour here and there, or would like to get more involved.

We have received the following update from Roads Dept at SLC regarding the issue of dangerous right turns into Avondale Avenue and Maxwell Drive at Kirkton Park:

“With respect to Avondale Avenue, I am pleased to inform you that an instruction had been issued, and we are currently programming the works for completion within this month. A raised thermplastic lining will be placed at the junction of Avondale Avenue and Whitemoss Avenue to reinforce the ‘no right turn’. Signage will also updated.

Please note, however, that these works have been rescheduled on several occasions due to the lack of suitable dry weather windows, particularly during periods when winter gritting operations must take priority. I appreciate your understanding as we balance these operational demands.

Turning to Maxwell Drive, a scheme has been prepared which will provide a solid part raised thermoplastic area at the junction with Kirkton Park.

This will include both the refreshing of the hatched area and the renewal of give way markings; this scheme is likely to be scheduled for early in the new financial year”

We are aware that there have been posts online regarding the Showpark. We are hoping to hear from all parties involved and be able to give an informed and balanced picture of the current situation.

We are aware that the change of use planning application for 13 Whitemoss Road has been granted, despite more than 58 objections from local residents.

The property will become part of Avondale Dentists. We will be monitoring the parking issues in the area and the number of parking permits distributed to the practice. Concerns will be passed to Roads Dept.

Please remember if you have a small Community Group looking to fund a small project with the East Mains area we can provide small Microgrants.

Community Councils across South Lanarkshire have each been given £5000 annually from the South Lanarkshire Renewable Energy Fund to provide Micro grants to support local communities. And as well as these 21 community councils, a further six are also providing Micro grants from the Clyde windfarm fund.

Community Councils can award grants of up to £500 to support local constituted and non-constituted groups and where appropriate individuals. Each Community Council can also add conditions and limit grants as they deem most appropriate for their communities. Grant applications should be returned to the relevant Community Council

Well it’s been a busy couple of days for us on Facebook. We will be taking forward the views and opinions of East Mains residents, as nobody knows the area better, to the meeting and to the Licensing Board. We are a consultee and we are there to reflect the views of residents of the locale. As the area grows I think sometimes people forget we are not the town centre and local residents are faced with living in what is now the most densely licensed part of South Lanarkshire, there are 20 licensed units within the Conservation Area alone, an area of 0.2 mile by 0.2 mile. As the number of licenses grows so do the challenges for residents, many whom have lived in the area all their lives.

The Conservation area was not built for large outside drinking areas. The pavements are narrow and we are ever mindful that any obstruction makes it difficult for some to navigate.

We have always been supportive of local businesses and like to think they have good relationships with their residential neighbours. Long may it continue.
