East Grinstead Operatic Society

East Grinstead Operatic Society Community Theatre for East Grinstead
www.EGOS.org.uk The first shows were put on in the Whitehall Theatre which unfortunately got bombed during the war.

The East Grinstead Operatic Society, known as EGOS ( pronounced EGOSSS, although we all have our egos!) was started in 1922. They mainly put on such things as Gilbert and Sullivan and Ivor Novello. We later switched to performing at the Adeline Genee theatre until it closed down. Luckily a new theatre was built in East Grinstead, the Chequer Mead, and we have been performing there since 1996. As m

usical tastes and singing styles changed, EGOS began to produce more modern musicals, but decided to still keep its historical name, even though we no longer put on operas anymore. EGOS is a charity and therefore does not pay its members and artists for performing and all proceeds are plough back into the society to be used for future shows. There is a membership fee of £25 a year and a show levy of about £25 if you are actually in a show. We generally put on one big musical per year but have recently created a smaller cabaret troupe in order to keep singing during the winter months. At present we put on a big show in September and begin rehearsals for it in May. Please do contact us as we are always looking for new members and performers. We like to think that we are a fun and friendly group who keep the tradition of musical theatre alive in East Grinstead by producing shows of a wonderful standard! DID YOU KNOW..... that Nigel Harman started his career with EGOS?! He performed in the shows, 'Oklahoma' and 'Annie Get Your Gun'. His dad, Del, also directed many shows for EGOS. I met him when he directed 'The Pyjama Game'. Nigel is doing so well in Strictly!
