EMCTrust The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust inspires young people aged 8-24 to believe in a brighter future. SCO44013

When treatment ends our work begins as for many young people simply picking up where they left off before their diagnosis isn’t possible. Through sailing and outdoor activity, young people…
* build confidence by making friends with others who have had similar experiences - often for the first time.
* rediscover independence away from home and outside of their ‘cancer bubble’.
* begin to realise wh

at they are capable of again.
* stop feeling like the ‘only one’. Their mental wellbeing improves, and they can start to re-establish their place in the world. We believe every young person should feel valued, accepted, optimistic and independent living through and beyond cancer. Established: 2003
Registered Charity Number: 1096491
Scottish Charity No.

Josh speaks openly about his experience of cancer and life after treatment, sharing some of the challenges that don’t always get talked about. Ellen reflects on what inspired her to found the charity and why she believes the young people we support are some of the bravest people she’s ever met. Frank also shares how the support of players of Postcode Lottery UK helps make it all possible. 💙

If you haven't listened yet, we'd really encourage you to. You can find the High Performance podcast on YouTube, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

“Facing cancer at a young age doesn’t close the door on adventure, ambition or joy.”

During his recovery from Ewing sarcoma, George joined us on three trips. He says those moments out on the water, surrounded by nature and sharing experiences with people who just got it were some of the most powerful of his life.

Now, five years on, George is giving back by taking on the Cotswold Way Ultra Challenge with his wife Shannon and younger brother Lewis. Today will see them tackle a demanding 50km route from Wotton-under-Edge to Cirencester, a journey that could take up to 16 hours to complete.

Good luck George, Shannon and Lewis - you’ve got this. 💪

Ahead of this year’s sailing trips, we brought the skipper crew together to get ready for another unforgettable summer. ⛵️

Being a skipper is about much more than sailing. It’s about making sure every young person who comes on board feels supported, including those with visual impairments or reduced mobility.

A huge thank you to Wetwheels Foundation, who helped us better understand what it’s like to navigate pontoons with a visual impairment, and to Patricia from MOVE Against Cancer Charity for sharing the importance of physical activity for young people living through and beyond cancer.

We also continued our EDIB learning, refreshed our safety management discussions and ran through man overboard practice too - don’t worry, it’s not something we’ve ever had to put into practice on our trips 🤣

Safe to say, our skippers are ready and excited to welcome young people on board this summer for the fun, friendships and life-changing adventures ahead.

With our adventures now underway, being on a trip can bring up all sorts of emotions, thoughts and conversations. Meeting others who just get it is a really powerful part of the experience and for some, it can spark reflections that stay with you once you’re home.

That’s why we’ve partnered with specialist youth mental health charity Mind Over Cancer. Led by the lovely Susie, who brings over 25 years’ experience across the NHS and charity sector.

The focus is on creating a safe, supportive space where young people can come together and build a toolkit to navigate life’s challenges - from exams to relationships and everything in between. 💙

Together, we’re giving young people who join us the chance to stay connected, continue those conversations, and look after their mental wellbeing.

These free monthly sessions run from October to May and are open to anyone who feels they’d benefit from a bit of extra support after their trip.

💬 Here’s just some of what past participants have had to say…
