Meet the Artists – Constable250: Rivers and Skies Commission 🎨

Join us at Flatford to meet the artists behind the Constable250 Rivers and Skies Commission, a special programme celebrating the landscapes that inspired John Constable and exploring their relevance today through contemporary art.

Come along to hear directly from the artists about their creative journeys, inspirations and the ideas behind their commissioned works. It's a fantastic opportunity to engage with contemporary art in one of Britain's most iconic landscapes.

Constable 250 Event

Have you ever wondered how the National Trust maintains the views at Flatford to reflect Constable's paintings? Now is your chance to find out.

On Friday 19 June, join our Countryside Manager, Dave Piper, for a walk around Flatford, looking at how he and his team care for the famous painting views and keep them recognisable 200 years after Constable depicted them on canvas.

Constable 250 Event

If the celebration of Constable's 250th birthday has got you in a creative mood, then we may have the perfect suggestion.

In a month's time, from the 10-13 July, we welcome the Colchester and Ipswich Arts Societies for a weekend of creativity at Flatford. At their Draw-In event, you will be able to try your hand at drawing, with expert guidance from artists. The event is free and materials will be provided. All ages and abilities welcome (children must be accompanied).

This great photo of the late Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee flypast is a reminder that we may see another aerial spectacle today. The King's birthday flypast is due to pass over the area between 12.30pm and 1.30pm, so if you are at Flatford you may see some of the planes . The exact route and time will of course vary, but we have been a good vantage point in previous years.

And while you are at Flatford, why don't you pop in for a cup of tea!

On the 11 June we celebrated the 250th anniversary of John Constable's birth. The rain was relentless, but that didn't stop us having a party at Flatford. At noon, we cut a cake and raised a glass to celebrate the man and his art.

Lots of people joined together to make the day possible, so we'd like to thank everyone who took part, helped out, turned up and smiled - despite the rain!

As we get nearer to John Constable's 250th birthday on the 11 June, we thought we'd share some of the things the team at Flatford are doing to celebrate.

Our talented Food and Beverage team are decorating the shortbread and coffee they sell in the tea room. It tastes as good as it looks too!
