A wonderful find from SWI’s history!

Following yesterday’s post about our historic trophies, we were delighted to hear from Aberdeenshire Federation, who got in touch with information about some older awards and medals in their possession.

Take a look at this beautiful silver tea set, won by Newmachar SWI back in 1931 at the National Conference held in Aberdeenshire!

It’s wonderful to uncover these pieces of our history and learn more about the achievements of SWI members over the years.

Do you have any information about older trophies, awards or medals presented as part of SWI’s National Competitions? We would love to hear from you as part of our ongoing Heritage Project.

Please get in touch with Dr Valentina Bold at [email protected].

Thank you to Aberdeenshire Federation SWI for sharing this fantastic piece of SWI history with us!

Today, the Queen Elizabeth Digital Memorial releases rarely seen archival photographs and memories of the late Queen’s life to mark the fourth anniversary of her passing.

The SWI was honoured to share a special find from the 1953 Scottish Home and Country magazine. Written by Mrs Lamb, a member of Crathie Institute and wife of Rev John Lamb of Crathie Kirk, the article, Happy Memories of Our Queen shares her personal memories of the young Queen’s girlhood on Royal Deeside.

A special thanks to SWI member Ann McGhee who brought the article to life again by making a recording of Mrs Lamb’s words allowing this wonderful piece of SWI history to be heard more than 70 years after it was first published.

You can listen to the recording of the article here: https://www.theswi.org.uk/heritage/swi-archive/

We'd like to encourage any of our members to share their own memories of the late Queen via the Queen Elizabeth Digital Memorial website: https://www.queenelizabeth.com/ =6.07/57.124/-1.787

We've been working on something a little different for September... Over the next few weeks we'll be exploring what the I in SWI means to our members. We wonder... What does the I mean to you?
