In March, we celebrated mothers with crafts and cards. Wildwood Beavers (Wed 6-8yrs) got very muddy on a hike in Duxford. Javelin Cubs (Thu 8-10½yrs) built climbable tripods and catapults (seeing who could fire the furthest). Sirius Cubs (Mon) made maps and compasses. Arrow Scouts (Tue, 10½-14yrs) made balloon powered cars. Hitchhiker Explorers (Fri, 14-18yrs) made huge marble runs (to get the longest and fastest route over the hut) and did the Monopoly challenge in London (racing to different parts of the board to collect points). Both our Beavers and Explorers are looking for new members. If you know anyone, please contact us. They don’t have to have been in Scouts before. Beavers are 6-7yrs, leaving after they turn 8.

In February, the hut was filled with pancakes - yum! Forest Beavers (Fri, 6-8yrs) went to the fire station and got drenched by the hoses! Wildwood Beavers (Wed) enjoyed Lunar New Year with games and snacks. Javelin Cubs (Thu 8-10½yrs) built stomp rockets whilst Sirius Cubs (Mon) celebrated Founders Day. Arrow Scouts (Tue, 10½-14yrs) enjoyed World Pokemon Day. Hitchhiker Explorers (Fri, 14-18yrs) did the Southern 50, 50km route through the rolling hills (and mud!) of the Chilterns. Our Beavers and Explorers are looking for new members. They don’t have to have been in Scouts before. Beavers are 6-7yrs, leaving just after they turn 8.

We thank all of our helpers and parents. Our current Publicity lead is stepping down shortly – the role covers social media, the newsletter and other short updates. The role does not require trustee membership and could be shared. We also need extra help with Explorers (Fri, 14-18yrs) - our oldest group and lots of fun! The group may struggle to run otherwise.

In January, Forest Beavers (Fri, 6-8yrs) celebrated Burns Night with haggis, Scottish games and shortbread. Wildwood Beavers (Wed) loved playing human hungry hippos and building spaghetti bridges. Sirius and Javelin Cubs (Mon, Thu 8-10½yrs) enjoyed the caves and climbing walls. Arrow Scouts (Tue, 10½-14yrs) built kites and practised their circus skills. Hitchhiker Explorers (Fri, 14-18yrs) held a quiz night welcoming back previous Explorers and Leaders.

HELP NEEDED: After over 5 years of doing a fabulous job of writing our newsletters both for the local magazines and for our parents, including throughout the pandemic when keeping everyone in touch with what the Group was doing was even more important than ever, Michela has decided to hang up her keyboard. We like to say a huge thank you to Michela for all that she has done. However we are not saying goodbye completely as she will still be a regular leader at WildWood Beavers.

We are therefore looking for a volunteer(s) to write and send the monthly updates for the local village newsletters, Look, Chatterbox etc using information from the leaders and section pages about what each section has been doing. Ideally whoever takes the role will also produce a termly newsletter for the parents and look after the Group social media accounts.

This is a really flexible role, it could be shared between two people if you and a friend would like to get involved together. You would be very welcome to attend meetings if you wish but it is not a requirement. Leaders can be contacted both in person or messaged, whichever suits you best. You don't have to know anything about the Group prior to starting, Michela will be able to explain what is needed and put you in contact with the leaders. It would be a great way to get involved in the Group, find out more about what goes on and it would be a huge help. It takes a lot of volunteer hours both by the leaders and by the people behind the scenes to run a Scout Group as big as ours so all help is really appreciated.

If you are interested please speak to Michela at Beavers or contact me at [email protected]

Many thanks for your support.

Have a lovely weekend

In December, we enjoyed our Christmas activities… crafts, parties, quizzes, baking and games. Wildwood Beavers (Wed, 6-8yrs) decorated their own cookies. Sirius and Javelins Cubs (Mon and Thu, 8-10½yrs) decorated a tree at St Peters, Duxford (one of several on display). Other activities included Forest Beavers (Fri, 6-8yrs) inventing their own machines and Arrow Scouts (Tue, 10½-14yrs) going bowling. Hitchhiker Explorers (Fri, 14-18yrs) did Song and Tell, where they brought a song and explained why they liked it.
