Today, on International Holocaust Memorial Day, we pause to remember all those who suffered under N**i persecution. It is crucial to honour the memory of not only the six million Jewish victims, but also the countless others who were targeted, including the LGBT+ community.

Let us stand united against hatred and discrimination, ensuring that the lessons of the past are never forgotten. We must continue to fight for equality, dignity, and respect for all people, regardless of their identity. ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ

Today, a great sadness is shared amongst the whole LGBT+ community upon the tragic news of the passing of James Lee Williams, better known as The Vivienne, at just 32 years old. The Vivienne made โ€œherstoryโ€ as the first winner of RuPaulโ€™s Drag Race UK and quickly became an icon in the drag community, earning the title of Drag Ambassador for the UK. They were a trailblazer, starring in Dancing on Ice, performing in The Wizard of Oz in London, and recently touring as the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

The Vivienne's impact has been felt far and wide, and their legacy will live on, especially among all young people who looked up to them. They were a fierce advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, particularly the trans community, and took a stand when they were the victim of a homophobic attack in McDonald's in Liverpool a few years ago. Their presence at Prides across the world and their dedication to visibility and inclusivity will never be forgotten. Rest in power, The Vivienne. ๐Ÿ’”

If you have been affected at all by the passing of The Vivienne, please reach out to one of our support workers at LGBT+ Northeast. Weโ€™re always happy to listen.

As part of Transgender Day of Remembrance, Waythrough LBGT+ North East organised for South Tyneside's Town Hall to be lit up with purple light, to highlight this day. As well as the town hall, landmarks in Sunderland, including the Northern Spire Bridge, Beacon of Light, Keel Square, Hylton Castle, the lighthouse at Seaburn, Fulwell Mill, Market Square and High Street West were enveloped in pink, white and light blue light.

Weโ€™d like to say a massive thank you to Sunderland and South Tyneside Council for lighting up these landmarks to mark such an important occasion; also to Sunderland Empire who along with lighting up their building, also gifted us tickets to Dear Evan Hanson for our young people to enjoy.

Transgender people experience disproportionately high levels of homicide and assault. Their families and loved ones too often see no justice. Countries around the world must ensure every hate crime is fully investigated. Waythrough continues to battle to ensure acceptance and support for transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people. It is everyoneโ€™s responsibility to ensure LGBT+ people can live full lives of dignity, without fear of violence or harm. Until then, we will continue to speak loudly and clearly to end transphobic violence and homicide.

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. On this day we honour the lives of trans and non-binary people whose stories were tragically cut short by violence and discrimination.

Let us stand together in solidarity, amplifying the voices of those who are no longer with us and supporting those who continue to live authentically. May we continue to advocate for a world where every person can exist without fear, and where love and respect are universal.
