As part of Transgender Day of Remembrance, Waythrough LBGT+ North East organised for South Tyneside's Town Hall to be lit up with purple light, to highlight this day. As well as the town hall, landmarks in Sunderland, including the Northern Spire Bridge, Beacon of Light, Keel Square, Hylton Castle, the lighthouse at Seaburn, Fulwell Mill, Market Square and High Street West were enveloped in pink, white and light blue light.
Weโd like to say a massive thank you to Sunderland and South Tyneside Council for lighting up these landmarks to mark such an important occasion; also to Sunderland Empire who along with lighting up their building, also gifted us tickets to Dear Evan Hanson for our young people to enjoy.
Transgender people experience disproportionately high levels of homicide and assault. Their families and loved ones too often see no justice. Countries around the world must ensure every hate crime is fully investigated. Waythrough continues to battle to ensure acceptance and support for transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people. It is everyoneโs responsibility to ensure LGBT+ people can live full lives of dignity, without fear of violence or harm. Until then, we will continue to speak loudly and clearly to end transphobic violence and homicide.
