Well done to Sgt McNabola and Cdts Haswell and Coy on representing the squadron at the Inter-Squadron swimming competition last weekend. Together they came away with strong individual results and placed 3rd overall in the senior boys category!

Climbing mountains (via a climbing wall!)

Yesterday, with cadets from 2505 - Bishop Auckland Squadron - Royal Air Force Air Cadets and 1407 Newton Aycliffe Squadron RAFAC, we worked together to climb a total of 2,232 metres in under 8 hours - the equivalent height of Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis combined!

A big thank you to 2505 Squadron for the invitation, all the staff, and ROF 59 for the use of the wall!

National Cadet Week - Lord Lieutenant Showcase

This evening we were privileged to be joined by Mr Mike Butterwick CBE to round off National Cadet week! We learnt about the role of the Lord Lieutenant, his role for cadet and our armed forces, and he spoke highly of the cadet forces being an ex-cadet himself.

We were then treated to a selections of videos and presentations showing our year in review, recent DofE expeditions, and summer camps that our cadets have enjoyed. Following light refreshments, and a chance to talk with the volunteers, he toured the squadron to see what activities cadets can get up to on a typical parade night including leadership, first aid, robotics, drill, and radio.

National Cadets Week - Cadets Save Lives

In the RAFAC, cadets have the opportunity to learn what could one day be potentially life saving skills through our first aid progressive training syllabus.

Within the first 6 months of joining, cadets will already have completed basic first aid training including the primary survey, CPR, and the recovery position. Once a cadet is 16, they're eligible for the silver first aid course - a 16 hour St John Ambulance qualification.

National Cadet Week - Community Action

Today is all about cadets in the community! Last parade night out cadets were helping out Durham Markets with their poppy project for the upcoming remembrance season. Throughout the night, the cadets managed to attach 700 poppies to the net, ready to be displayed in Durham market entrance as part of a 16000 poppy display. Each poppy will represent a DLI soldier who lost their life in the 2 world wars.

This evening, 14 cadets have been out on the streets of Durham on a litter pick, helping to clear up our local area. Thank you to Litter Free Durham for the loan of the equipment and thank you to the cadets and staff for your efforts!

Yesterday, 6 cadets got the opportunity to take to the skies for the first time on an Air Experience Flight from RAF Leeming! The cadets had the chance to take control of the aircraft try out some aerobatics. Thank you to the pilots and ground crew at 11 AEF and to the volunteers for making the day possible.

Last parade night we visited Wynyard Planetarium for an lesson on solar and lunar eclipses, star constellations, and meteorites in their 360 night dome! Fortunately, the weather was on our side too and we were treated to a clear sky, allowing us to visit the observatory to get a closer look at the moon and some stars.

The night was thoroughly enjoyed by all cadets and staff, thank you Wynyard Planetarium & Observatory for having us!
