February 24th: Mexico’s Flag Day 🇲🇽

Flag Day was officially established in 1934, though it was formally recognized by President Lázaro Cárdenas in 1940. This date was chosen to commemorate the proclamation of the Plan of Iguala in 1821, the historic document that paved the way for Mexico's independence.

The Meaning of the Colors

While the meanings have evolved since 1821, the modern interpretation of the tricolor is:

Green: Symbolizes hope for the nation and its people.

White: Represents unity and the purity of Mexican ideals.

Red: Honors the blood of the national heroes who fought for the country’s freedom.

The Coat of Arms: An Aztec Legacy

At the center of the white stripe lies the National Coat of Arms, inspired by the legend of the founding of Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City). It depicts a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus devouring a snake. This image represents the sacred sign given to the Aztecs to build their empire.

Why Is It Celebrated?

This day is dedicated to strengthening national identity and pride. It serves as a moment for the country to reflect on the values of liberty and justice, bringing all citizens together under a single, powerful emblem of their shared history.
